ATSSA Pavement Marking Committee
ATSSA Midyear Meeting, Kansas City, Mo., August 2014—
Pavement Marking Committee Chairman
Travis Hansen greeted attendees and opened the agenda. With technology innovations leading the way, Parsons
Brinckerhoff Vice President/Senior Project Manager Scott Shogan presented a report/discussion on the Vehicle to
Infrastructure (V2I) progress. Texas A&M Transportation Institute Senior Researcher Paul Carlson reported on
and discussed his joint ATSSA/Federal Highway Administration-funded study on “Nighttime Safety and Pavement
Marking Retroreflectivity: North Carolina,” providing the basis for future development of a powerful tool to project
average yearly crash reductions based on restriping cycles.
The Funding and Safety Subcommittees were merged and
renamed the Pavement Marking Advancement
Subcommittee, which is chaired by Kevin Goforth. It is
charged with “advancing the understanding of the safety
significance and funding support of quality pavement
markings.” The Contrast Pavement Marking Task Force,
chaired by Ron Sims, updated its focus in response to the
V2I technology to two tasks: ID the needs of the
Automakers and ID Best Practices for Contrast Markings.
ATSSA Director of Government Relations Nate Smith
presented an update and discussion on the Highway Bill/
Industry Funding and potential funding mechanisms.
ATSSA Director of Member Services Dan Williams
provided a review of the 2014 ATSSA Leadership Program
and information for the 2015 Leadership Program in Crystal
City, Va., April 25–27.
Texas A&M Transportation Institute Senior Researcher Paul Carlson
