deficient, weight and speed of installation was an issue. Another concern was the
concrete bridge deck being in such poor shape that the anchoring pattern needed to be
shallow as a through deck anchor was not an option.
When the contract was awarded, the contractor chose BarrierGuard 800 to accomplish
the task in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner. Weighing only 60 pounds per foot,
BarrierGuard 800 worked within the reduced load limits of the structurally deficient
bridge. An integral feature of the installation was the narrow, 21-inch footprint of
BarrierGuard 800 that allows maximum travel lane usage for bridge traffic.
Limited working hours (10
pm
to 5
am
) to accommodate the traffic flow requirements of
Naval base personnel put the contractor and BarrierGuard 800 to the test. The ability to
install up to 1,000 feet of BarrierGuard 800 per hour helped to complete the 5,400-foot
barrier installation on budget and on time.
BarrierGuard 800 steel barrier has a life cycle of about two decades, which means this
installation should outlast the bridge.
Maintenance repair was needed on Interstate 44 on the Oklahoma Turnpike, and the
contractor chose BarrierGuard 800 steel barrier to protect workers during the night
construction project. On the heavily traveled Oklahoma Turnpike,
Action Safety Supply
Company
of Oklahoma City had the task of providing and installing 4,200 feet of
BarrierGuard 800 in little more
than seven hours. A five-man
crew and seven flatbed trucks
were used to deliver and install
the 4,200 feet of BarrierGuard
800 in one shift.
As a result, the contractor saved
80 percent on transportation
costs—the transportation of
portable concrete barrier would
have required 42 truckloads
or six times more than
BarrierGuard 800. Being able
to use fewer trucks was an
added bonus because of the
limited shoulder space for
loading and unloading material. Another positive was the ability to install directly from
the trailer bed as the barrier arrived, which allowed maximum travel lanes to remain
open to motorists at all times during the installation and removal. Very little disruption
occurred during the maintenance repair project.
While maintenance repair was needed on the
Oklahoma Turnpike, BarrierGuard 800 protected
workers during the night construction project.
The task included the installation of 4,200 feet of
BarrierGuard 800 in little more than seven hours.
