SAFETY

SAFETY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL

Winter Driving

By John Sallak, OTA Safety & Compliance Consultant

N

ow that we are experiencing winter driving conditions, here are some reminders.

Time can be spent now with your drivers discussing procedures to avoid crashes,

delays and injuries during these winter months.

Some tips to keep in mind:

`

`

SLOW DOWN

Fog, heavy rain, snow, fog will reduce visibility and traction. Plan

ahead to allow additional travel time to your destination.

`

`

PACK FOR WINTER

Unexpected delays may occur. Be prepared with extra winter

clothing for unexpected layovers, or for work outside the truck; take extra snacks, extra

daily medications if needed. Fuel earlier to avoid “low on fuel” situations in bad weather.

`

`

CHECK TIRE CHAINS

Before adverse weather ever arrives, make sure your chains

fit, and repairs are made if needed. Carry repair materials. Do not delay installing

chains! When the chain sign comes up, you should be chained.

`

`

CHECK TIRES

Be sure to have tires with sufficient tread depth for low traction

conditions; check inflation frequently. Colder conditions may reduce tire pressure.

`

`

BE SEEN

Be sure to clear and clean all lights and mirrors of any road film and grime.

You need good, clear visibility, and other drivers must see you.
