THE WORD “EXCELLENCE” IS USED TO DESCRIBE A QUALITY

of being outstanding or

exceptionally good, and according to the Oxford dictionary, the word is derived from

the Latin word excellentem, which means, “towering, prominent, distinguished,

surpassing, or superior.”

It is in the true spirit of the word excellent that we present the award-winning projects

fromACPA’s 2016 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards. These 27 projects and the

people behind themrepresent the best of the best of the concrete pavement construction,

rehabilitation, and preservation projects across North America.

Towering, prominent, distinguished, and many other synonyms of excellence also

come to mind when we think of the recipients of several awards presented during its

recent annual meeting. At the pinnacle of these awards is ACPA’s coveted Hartmann-

Hirschman-Egan Award, which was presented to James “Doug” Pitcock, Jr., for his

strong leadership in the transportation-construction community formore than 60 years.

The awards also recognize Belknap Place, Texas’ oldest concrete pavement; William J.

Hughes Technical Center inAtlantic City, N.J. for supporting the comprehensive needs

of the aviation community; and Pat Long, who combines his many skills and talents to

offer a unique and successful brand of promotion.

Also in the spirit of excellence, we are also pleased to report on the news of Lori

Tiefenthaler being named as the 2017 Chairperson of the AmericanConcrete Pavement

Association. In the 54-year history of the association, Tiefenthaler is the first woman

to serve in the pinnacle role as chairperson of the board of directors. She draws on her

experience as Senior Director ofMarketing for LehighHanson, Inc., as well as other key

management positions in the cement & concrete materials industries. We are excited

about the exceptional programs, projects, and plans she has in store for this year.

Last, but not least, we are proud to present two superior project stories, a challenging

concrete overlay project at John F. Kennedy International Airport and Kansas’ first

major design-build project, which was also its largest transportation project to date.

In these stories, we showglimpses of the bold leadership, fervent passion, and the tenacious

drive to achieve the best. In every sense of the word, these are examples of excellence.
