ACPA Presents James D. Pitcock, Jr.

with Har tmann-Hirschman-Egan Award

JAMES D. “DOUG” PITCOCK, JR.

, owner,

Chairman of the Board, andCEOofWilliams

Brothers Construction Company, Houston,

was awarded the American Concrete

Pavement Association’s 2016 Hartmann-

Hirschman-Egan (HHE) Award. The award

recognized Pitcock for his leadership in both

the transportation-construction industry,

as well as one of the largest concrete paving

contractors in the United States.

Pitcock,alongwithClaudeandJohnWilliams,

founded Williams Brothers Construction

Company in 1955. In addition to leading a

successful company for more than six decades,

he has served in many volunteer leadership

positions, including national President of The

Associated General Contractors of America, and

twice as President of the Texas Highway Branch

of the Associated General Contractors.

For the concrete pavement industry andACPA, he

has remained a solid supporter of theAssociation’s

mission through 23 years of membership. In 2008

he was a strong supporter of ACPA's financial

commitment to the National Concrete Pavement

Technology Center (CP Tech Center).

“It is a privilege that our Association enjoys when

it highlights the most affective and influential

people in our industry. Mr. Pitcock will forever

be on the list of Hartmann-Hirschman-Egan

recipients, which started in 1968 with the first

award going to Jimmie Johnson, inventor

of the slipform paving machine. We are

extremely pleased to shine a light on Mr.

Pitcock’s achievements within the concrete

paving community” stated Gerald F. Voigt,

P.E., President & CEO of ACPA.

Williams Brothers often builds more than 2

million square yards of pavement annually,

and under Pitcock’s leadership, the company

has earned a reputation for consistently set-

ting and achieving high standards for paving

production, efficiency, and quality. Pitcock’s

vision for the future also resulted inWilliams

Brothers operating one of the largest recycled

concrete operations in the United States, dem-

onstrating both a commitment and proficiency

in sustainable construction practices long before

they were in vogue.

LORI TIEFENTHALER, SENIOR DIRECTOR

of Market-

ing for Lehigh Hanson, Inc., has been appointed

Chairperson of the AmericanConcrete Pavement

Association’s Board of Directors. She is the first

woman to serve as the top volunteer leader in

the 54-year history of the Association.

Her appointment to Chairperson reflects Tief-

enthaler’s more than 30 years of experience and

expertise in the cement and concrete materials

industries. She brings a broad range of skills and

expertise to her new role and her background

includes extensive experience in sales, marketing,

sustainability, and the development of promo-

tional programs to increase concrete and cement

usage. Prior to joining LehighHanson, she served

as Executive Director for the Southeast Cement

Association and heldmanagement positions with

the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and her

family’s ready mixed concrete and sand and

gravel operations in Iowa.

Tiefenthaler accepted the ACPA leadership role

from 2016 Chairman Steve Jackson, President

of Cedar Valley Corp., LLC. Following a time-

honored gavel passing ceremony, she recognized

Jackson as well as current and past leaders of the

associations for their contributions.

“I am extremely honored to accept this gavel and

the responsibility of leading this great association

in 2017,” said Tiefenthaler. “As I look back on the

53 chairmen that came before me, I personally

knew or know 33 of them, and I am humbled to

join their ranks.”

In closing her acceptance speech, Tiefenthaler

challenged association members and others to

share their experiences with concrete paving

and encourage people to see concrete paving in

person at open houses or other events.

“Seeing concrete paving trains up close inspires

people and projects,” she said. “Reach out and

instill some concrete pavement passion in en-

gineers, students, project managers and staff,

or policy makers.”

In addition to leading the ACPA’s Board of Di-

rectors, Tiefenthaler also serves on the Board of

Directors for the Slag Cement Association, as well

as on the paving and sustainability committees

of the PCA and NRMCA. Tiefenthaler has also

served on the Advisory Board of the CP Tech

Center and the Advisory Task Groups for the

Concrete Sustainability Hub at the Massachu-

setts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.
