New Mexico Dental Journal, Summer 2016
For more information visit the New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care website.
www.rld.state.nm.us/boards/dental_health_care3. The Board is following the
nationwide discussion on
reducing or eliminating
traditional forms of clinical
exams for dental licensure.
In addition to that, the
American Dental
Education Association has issued a statement
recently that is encouraging greater portability
of licensure throughout the United States, with
minimal or no restrictions. We already have very
liberal licensing in our state, and licensure by
credentials is fairly easy, needing a 5-year period
free from any board actions from another state.
Also, we currently accept all the regional testing
service clinical exams for application for licensure.
They also reiterated the position in opposition
to the use of “human subject, patient-based
components of clinical licensure examinations
and the adoption of an alternative and validated
process for the clinical assessment of candidate
for licensure.” We’ll see what happens next, but
the processes for dental licensure will be changing
from what we have now.
4. The Joint Commission on
National Dental Examinations
is now in the process of
replacing the Parts I and II of
the current written exam with
the new “Integrated National
Board Examination”. The full
replacement is scheduled
by August 1, 2022. Maybe
some of you have more
information, but it appears
that they are combining the
two parts into just one exam.
5. Here are the numbers of
Licensees and Certificate
Holders as of May 20, 2016
a. Dentists: 1463
b. Hygienists: 1279
c. Assistants with certifications: 2652
d. EFDAs: 4
e. CDHCs: 1
f. Non-Dentist Owners: 27
g. CS I permits: 148
h. CS II permits: 69
i. DS/GA permits: 63
6. It would be beneficial for
the NMDA to develop ways
to increase the numbers of
the EFDAs and CDHCs.
I want to thank all of my fellow Board members,
the members of the Dental Hygienist Committee,
and Anesthesia, Rules, and Complaint Committees.
We have a good strong Board of Dental Health
Care, and our charge of public protection,
licensing, and disciplinary action is taken very
seriously. We greatly appreciate the NMDA’s input
at our quarterly meetings and throughout the year,
and hope that the good relationship and support
that we have developed continues.
