as scientific as Punxsutawney Phil’s annual ability to correctly determine
the longevity of winter. And by the time we roll into February, everyone—
from industry associations to retailers to PR firms to social media gurus to
magazines—has had a crack at it.
Some lists show consensus, which means those items might be legitimate
trends this year. Other items are fleeting sensations driven purely by consumers’
fear of missing out (we’re looking at you rainbow bagels and unicorn macarons).
