Fall Winter 2017

www.ohca.com Fall/Winter 2017 The Oregon Caregiver 25 How did your life change after you moved to this new place? It was hard. I just fell in love with Vanport. Wherever I go, wherever I stay, it can’t take the place of Vanport and it is just a substitute. But life goes on. I did well and I meet no strangers. You seemed to be making friends at the Capitol. I actually went to school with Jackie [Sen. Jackie Winters]. It was good to see her again. She’s a beautiful person—she has a true heart. In all of your years living in Portland, what has changed here? That’s a hard question. Portland is Portland to me—same old same old! How do you stay busy now? I’m a bingo caller and I call bingo on Mondays and Fridays here in the recreation room. I also do word searches—I keep them with me at all times—and if I get bored I just do one of these or I get to talking. I go over to the skilled side to talk with other residents who don’t have family around, and I go to church every Sunday. I also go to choir practice on Wednesdays, I go visiting, I go shopping, whatever I want to do. What’s the secret to staying so active? I’ve been very active all my life. My faith carries me forward. If I ever feel down and out, I give it to him, and he fixes it for me.  PROFILE Top Left: Aerial view of the Vanport flood, looking west from North Denver Avenue.
