21 colorad o nga.org LooseLeaf October/November 2018 Celosia  ‘Dracula’ from Pan American Seed The dark red flower and foliage are very eye catching. The dark red flower color and “brain-like” appearance of blooms seem to really fit the ‘Dracula’ name. It definitely is a novelty celosia with one big flower atop the plant. The unusual shape and eye-catching color would definitely add drama to an annual flower planting. It prefers sun and some additional moisture. Canna  ‘Cannova ® Bronze Scarlet’ from Ball Ingenuity Cannova canna is the first seed F1 canna series, which is easy to grow and more heat tolerant. It matures to 30 to 45 inches tall with dark red/purple foliage, which contrasts nicely with the vivid scarlet flowers. It flowers earlier in the season and continues late in the season. It prefers sun and some additional moisture. Lantana  Lucky™ Sunrise Rose from Ball Floral Plant This plant was ranked high by both professionals and consumers. It is an excellent choice for a sunny and more xeric site. It is covered with many orange to red flowers on fairly uniform plants with dark green foliage. It is also a good pollinator plant. Some Consumer Preferences Dahlia  XXL Durango from Dummen Orange This dahlia was ranked high by both professionals and consumers. It had a uniform growth habit on very vigorous plants. Many flowers with vibrant color were observed throughout the season. Flowers were held high above the foliage. Besides being great for mass displays, it is an excellent cut flower due to the size of the flower. It prefers sun and additional moisture to perform best. Lobularia  Passionaria™ Purple White from Ball Ingenuity This lobularia was very uniform in growth habit on vigorous plants with a solid canopy of flowers. We trialed them in containers and they filled the containers quickly. They have a pleasant smell, and are a good pollinator attracting many bees. This would make an excellent edging plant or a filler for containers. It prefers sun and is quite xeric in nature. Dahlia  ‘XXL Tabasco’ from Dummen Orange This is another excellent entry in the XXL series from Dummen Orange, due to great growth vigor and a uniform growth habit. The flowers are bicolored with red/yellow streaked flower petals. It is a great mass display plant and can also be an excellent cut flower. They prefer sun and some additional moisture. Coleus  ‘Premium Sun Mighty Mosiac’ from Pan American Seed This plant with multi-colored foliage had excellent resistance to setting any flowers. It performed well in the shade and can tolerate some sun. The growth habit is more upright, reaching 18 to 24 inches in height. It is a great plant for containers or as a colored foliage plant for annual flower borders.
