ABC-SEMI Issue 2 2019

Southeast Michigan Contractors  Issue 2 2019 17 There is an appetite in Lansing for skilled trades learning but a bigger hurdle than with policy makers is changing the minds of parents on what construction technology education is all about. There is a negative public perception on this topic that needs to be addressed. ABC SEMI: This magazine issue is about showcasing women in construction. It is no secret that this industry has historically been male-dominated. From a policy perspective, are there initiatives that are being created to increase women’s presence in the construction industry? Rep. Hornberger: Unfortunately, there is no legislation I am aware of that is addressing this issue. However, I am interested in the matter and think that educating students and parents on what this industry and training can offer is imperative. An idea for this could be enhancing high school counselors and social workers knowledge of the construction industry. ABC SEMI: What is your best advice to give to someone that is interested in becoming politically active? Rep. Hornberger: Everyone should run for office at least once and when you do know your non-negotiables and stick to them.
