www.calodging.com September/October 2017 9 Robert Lipinski, Director of Engineering at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel won the 2015 Stars of the Industry Award for Outstanding Manager of the Year. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED MAINTAINING YOUR PROPERTY? Some obstacles have been the water mandates set forth by Governor Brown and energy reduction challenges. Undergoing a three- phase multi-million dollar renovation project over the course of three years at Loews Santa Monica Beach involved a lot of moving parts and an extreme amount of coordination. WHAT IS A TYPICAL WORK DAY LIKE FOR YOU? What I love about my job is that there really is no “typical day” but we try to strike a balance between the short-term projects and the long-term goals of the hotel. Many days our team is faced with a surprise that can always be used as a learning experience. WHAT TOOLS OR TRAINING DO YOU USE TO MAKE YOUR JOB EASIER? Fortunately we are able to procure the best tools and equipment needed to execute our daily jobs more efficiently. We have mechanical lifts to prevent injuries, automated systems to aid in energy management, automated preventive maintenance and guest order systems, modern guest room technologies, and energy efficiencies. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN ENTERING MAINTENANCE AND ENGINEERING IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY? Establish a concise and clear communication channel with the whole management team. A positive attitude weighs more heavily over experience in an entry level position. I feel the hospitality industry is one that will recognize and promote rapid, unlimited growth if you are willing to work honestly and work hard towards a goal. 
