The Signal | Mar/Apr 2019 25 Innovation & New Programs SAFE STRIP builds on the latest devel- opments in sensor and data communi- cation technology. The data provided by the sensors enhances the C-ITS by implementing the same ITS-G5message standards and therefore integrates well in the European efforts to realize a stan- dardized C-ITS architecture. Since last year, SAFE STRIP organizes regular cross project clustering meetings with the SAFER-LC project and the SAFE-10-T ini- tiativemanaged by Ireland-based Gaven & Doherty GEOSOLUTIONS. The SAFE STRIP project is managed by ERTICO-ITS Europe with the technical lead taken by the Hellenic Institute of Transport of CERTH. The project started inMay 2017 and will run until 2020. SAFE STRIP is supported by European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement num- ber 723211. Erwin Vermassen is Senior Project Manager of Connected and Automated Driving for ERTICO – ITS Europe, and an industrial electronics engineer. In 2004, Vermassen joined ERTICO for the first time as the Project Manager of the GST sub-projects, Safety Channel and Open Systems. Vermassen has done some extensive work in the development of embed- ded computing systems mainly in the domains of Space, Telecommunications and Telematics. Maria Gkemou is a Senior Researcher at CERTH/ HIT and Head of Lab for Clean Vehicles and Technologies and of Lab for Intelligent Materials and Manufacturing in Transport. She is a Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineer with a Ph.D. on modeling of driving behavior in driving simulator and correla- tion with real traffic conditions. Her main fields of expertise are ITS, IST, driving simulation, sustainable mobility solutions, clean vehicles and technologies, pilot trials design, dangerous goods transport safety, and training in the transport field.
