American Traffic Safety Services Association 26 The Foundation Eighteen names added to the National Work Zone Memorial Memorial travels country, spreading awareness and honoring lives lost in work zones TheFoundation’sNationalWorkZone Memorial has already begun its 2019 travel, honoring those who lost their lives in work zones, and raising public aware- ness for the importance of work zone safety across the United States. Roadway workers, non-impaired mo- torists, first responders, law enforce- ment, pedestrians, and children killed in work zones are eligible each year to have their names submitted for inclu- sion on the National Work Zone Memo- rial. Eighteen names were added to the memorial in 2018, bringing the total to 1,473 names: • Edward Joseph Arnold • Keith Ledale Booker • William “Cas” Casdorph • Jorge Delgado Montes • Jeff Dyekman • Jarrell D. Gray • George T. Hammond • James L. “Pee Wee” Hopkins • Adan Lara • Nolan Olson • John Pasko • Maceo Amaro Perkins • David Michael Schwarz • Dave Smith • David Snell • Jonathan Wright • David Younger This year, ATSSA has partnered with The Foundation to cover the hosting fee for five public agencies that have not pre- viously hosted the memorial to host the National Work Zone Memorial at one of their media events. Thus far in 2019, the memorial has traveled to ATSSA’s 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in Tampa, Florida, the Florida Transporta- tion Builders Association 2019 Construc- tion Conference in Orlando, Florida, and an ATSSA New England Chapter Meeting in Concord, New Hampshire. “The National Work Zone Memorial is a somber yet powerful way to honor the lives of those who have been lost to a work zone incident. It calls attention to the tragedy of work zone crashes while making the issue of work zone safety a reality for policymakers and the motor- ing public. The Foundation is honored to offer the memorial for media and in- dustry events across the country to help spread awareness,” said The Founda- tion President David Krahulec. Marcie Walker, a recipient of The Foundation’s Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship, visited the National Work Zone Memorial at the 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo. Walker’s father is among the 1,473 names listed on the memorial.
