The Minnesota Department of
Transportation conducted a systemic
analysis of all local roads to identify
roadway features like visual traps on
horizontal curves that correlated with
severe crash types, such as roadway
departure. The team then applied low-cost
countermeasures—rumble strips and
chevron signs—to high-risk locations
across the system.
