WVFA Winter 2018-19

I N D U S T R Y N E W S 20 West Virginia Forestry Association Mountain State Forestry  | Winter 2018–2019 www.wvfa.org 2018 Forest Festival THE MOUNTAIN STATE FOREST FESTIVAL is one of the largest and oldest festivals in West Virginia. Every year, WVFA continues to promote the beauty and splendor of our mountains and valleys in all their autumn glory while also promoting sustainable development, conservation, and culture of our abundant natural resources for the future at this event. This year, WVFA was recognized for of exhibit with the “Maid of Honor’s Choice” award. At the 2018 festival, ending Saturday, WVFA was joined at the Forest and Wood exhibits by Armstrong Flooring, David Rice Woodcarvings, WV Division of Forestry, WV Department of Agriculture, WV Christmas Tree Growers Association, Glenville State College Forestry Program, the American Chestnut Foundation, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, WV Tree Farm Program, Project Learning Tree, and the WV Loggers Council. The festival affords West Virginia the opportunity to share information about the important role our state’s natural resources play in our economy and it’s development. Rich in tradition, the Festival also plays a major role in the economy and offers something for everyone to enjoy, such as, headline concerts and music shows, lumberjack competition, forestry and wood exhibits, juried art show, photography exhibit, quilt show, arts and crafts, amusement rides, parades, and the Royal Coronation of Queen Silvia. Thanks to State Fair Volunteers By Dan Abston, WVFA Communication Committee Chair, Weyerhaeuser I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THE VOLUNTEERS who helped represent the West Virginia Forestry Association during the 2018 West Virginia State Fair which ran from August 9 to August 18. This year, we experienced a significant downsizing of our display area plus, relocation from our traditional spot where the WVFA booth was setup for many years. As many can remember, we were located just inside the large door on the south end of the WV Agriculture building and occupied approximately a 10’ x 20’ area. This year, our area was moved to the opposite side of the building and reduced to a 10’ x 10’ space near the fire exit door on the east side. I commend Frank Stewart for his efforts in setting up the 2018 display under such short notice and, trying to complete the office move from Ripley to Charleston at the same time. Again, I want to thank everyone involved in manning the booth this year and as we look forward to 2019, I’ll be collecting feedback and recommendations or ideas on ways we can create a professional display that fully utilizes the new space we have plus, a display we can all be proud of!
