21 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org The Lost Surveyor T his installment of the Lost Survey- or takes us across the country to a surveyor from our past who has affected all our lives. As a part of this journey, I’ll also share my experience attending the NSPS Spring meeting and Lobby Day on your behalf. For those who have not visited Washington D.C., I highly recommend it. Since my first visit in 2010, Washington D.C. has become one of my favorite destinations. The museums, mon- uments and history of the entire area is simply amazing. Since I find politics and the law to be a rather fascinating topic, participating in NSPS Lobby Day was a great opportuni- ty. It is empowering to know one can step into a representative’s office or attend a hearing without great fanfare. A visitor to D.C. can participate in our government’s inner workings on a wide array of topics just by showing up. Many thanks to NSPS, JB Byrd and John Palatiello for coordinat- ing this event. Special thanks to our own Darrel Fuller for all his effort on our be- half here in Oregon and more recently at NSPS Lobby Day. Darrel organized our meetings with Oregon congressional rep- resentatives and guided us through the cavernous halls like a pro. Arriving in D.C. on Tuesday we began with a quick orientation of what to expect the next day, how to act (and not act) in our various meetings and a general review of the decorum expected. A review of the bills and programs that NSPS was sup- porting this year was included. After the orientation meeting Darrel whisked us off to a great dinner at the Trump Hotel. Upon arrival he revealed we were joining him for his birthday dinner. It was a great evening capped off with a night time visit to some of my favorite monuments on the capitol mall before a long day of meetings on Wednesday. Wednesday morning began at 6am with a breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club and an- other review of the day’s events. We were joined by Senator John Barrasso (WY) and Representative Carol Miller (WV) who spoke to us about transportation and infrastruc- ture funding in the current political climate as well as their experiences working as elected officials. From there we ventured continues T Celebrating Darrell Fuller’s birthday at the Trump Hotel prior to Lobby Day. Cheers! Thomas Jefferson Memorial from the north side of the Tidal Basin.
