11 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org In Memoriam Russell was born to Russell Mitchell Karl Sr. and Vernette Anita Karl (Engel) on May 21, 1945 in Prineville, Oregon, along with his twin brother Robert. Af- ter a brief move to Rothschild Wis., the family moved back to LaPine, Oregon, then Burns, Oregon, and finally back to Bend, Oregon in 1967. Russ became interested in Land Survey- ing after he and his brother Bob worked for their father surveying power lines in the Burns area during summers while attending High School. In Loving Memory He received an honorable discharge af- ter serving six years in the U.S. Army National Guard. In 1985, Russ met Lynnette Rozelle and they were married soon after. After an extended illness, Lynn preceded Russ in death in 2011. Russ had a son, Devon Russell Karl by a previous marriage and a daughter Kimberly Sue also by a pre- vious marriage. He worked for various engineering firms in central Oregon including Century West Engineering, McCullough Bryant and As- sociates, David Evans and Associates, and after studying surveying courses, received his Land Surveyors License in 1987. Af- ter joining his brother Bob in 1988, they became Bob and Russ Karl, Professional Land Surveyors. Russ worked there until 2007. He belonged to the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon until his re- tirement in 2007. He was a musician, playing bass guitar with his brother in the Desert Gold Band as well as other bands during his lifetime. Russ also loved hunting and fishing, and camping trips including extended stays at Wickiup Reservoir fishing for trout. Russ will be missed by his son Devon, of Terrebonne, Oregon; Daughter Kimberly of Seabrook, Texas; Brother Bob (Donna) of Bend, Oregon; sisters Dianne Koops (Larry) of Prineville; Denise Schumacher (Bill) of Tumalo. Donations can be made in his name at the County Humane Society. x Roger Reece, age 82, of Grants Pass, OR, passed away Feb- ruary 26, 2018, at Rogue Valley Med- ical Center. Roger was born on No- vember 20, 1935, in Roseburg, Ore- gon, to Clarence and Margaret Reece. He attended Melrose Grade school and graduated from Roseburg High School in 1953. Roger worked from 1954–1970 for the Oregon State Highway Department on the survey crew for the construction of I-5 from Rice Hill to Canyonville. After obtaining his Professional Land Survey- or’s license in 1970, he moved his family to Grants Pass, OR, and joined Richard L. Templin Engineering and Surveying. In 1984, he purchased Templin’s engi- neering practice and renamed it Roger T. Reece Land Surveying. Roger was elected Josephine County Surveyor in 1984, and held office from 1984–1996. Roger was active in the community and his professional affiliations. His volun- teerism led to the development of the All Sports Park and North Valley High School athletic fields. Roger was also a member of the Rotary Club of Grants Pass, Active 20/30 Club, and was a member and past president of the Rogue River Chapter of the Professional Land Surveyors of Or- egon. As a member of the Grants Pass Golf Club for over 30 years, he involved himself in many improvement projects. He was a loving husband, father, grandfa- ther, and great-grandfather. His love for Elizabeth started in 1952, when she made him learn how to dance. Roger married Betty on February 26, 1954. They had two sons, David and Bruce, and daugh- ter (deceased) Sheryl. Roger will be remembered for many things: Big game hunter (many trophies remain in the garage), water skier (even learned how to barefoot), snow skier, and the one-handed golfer who took most everyone’s money he played against. He was always excited to see his great- grandchildren and his grandchildren. Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, and restoring vintage cars. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eliz- abeth Ann (Betty) Reece; son, David Jess Reece and his wife Nancy of Albany, Ore- gon; and son Bruce and his wife Danielle of Selma, Oregon. He has seven grand- children and three great-grandchildren. Donations can be made in his name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2701 NW Vaughn St, Suite 203, Portland, OR 97201. There was a Celebration of Life for Roger from11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at their home in Grants Pass (155 Kingsgate Way).
