23 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org The Lost Surveyor Cape Kiwanda has probably been most famous in the past for its commercial dory fleet which is now just a remnant of what it once was. The large dory fleet parking area is now developed into an RV park and only a few recreational dory fishermen keep the tradition alive. Many people also enjoy its tide pools, sliding down the sand dunes, surfing and the beautiful vistas from the top of the cape. Some limited shopping and of course the Pelican Brew Pub are also available nearby. One last bit of trivia on the Meldrum family, Henry Meldrumwas the Clackamas County Surveyor from 1884–86, John W. Meldrum (bottom right) held the posi- tion from 1888–1890 (Henry was his Deputy) and John held the position again from 1902–1906. Finally, D. Thompson (“DT”) Meldrum held the same position in 1911–1914, in 1921–1932 and again from 1940–1950. John and DT Meldrum were also Deputy County Surveyors under other County Surveyors.
