OTA Dispatch Issue 2 2019

10 Oregon Trucking Associations, Inc. Oregon Truck Dispatch EVENTS 2019 Annual Safety Conference SALEM CONVENTION CENTER | SALEM, OR | APRIL 18–20, 2019 THE SAFEST TRUCKING EVENT in Oregon was back again in Salem this year, and with many new attendees! OTA held committee, board, and council meetings the day before on the 17th to bring fresh ideas and provide updates on the state of the industry. Early arrivers got a chance to mingle during the welcome reception that evening while NW Fleet Safety Certification class graduates attended their official graduation dinner and reunion dessert reception. The event launched with opening comments followed by a full day of presentations and Safety Management Council (SMC) board elections. OTA member speakers included Andy Owens with A & M Transport and Workforce Oregon, Mike Card with Combined Transport on Creating a Culture of Safety, Todd Boldin with Reddaway on Safety Procedures at Your Customer’s Location, and Darren Lee with SAIF Corporation on Workers’ Compensation. OTA offered new breakout sessions on ELD & HOS Management presented by OTA’s Adam Williamson; a truck driving school panel by Don Edwards and Jim Brewster with IITR, and Greg Reisnaur with ETS; and Safety at Your Location & Load Securement by Mike Weaver and Garret Weaver with Associated Oregon Loggers. During breaks, members took time to visit our allied member booths to learn about new products and services. To change things up a bit, event organizers decided on an awards dinner this year instead of a breakfast where OTA recognized graduates of the NW Fleet Safety with glass awards (see page 12). Great West graciously sponsored our Annual OTA Safety Awards for fleets in each category and the Safety Professional of the Year based on company size. Congratulations to everyone who placed—especially Grand Champion, Terrain Tamers! (Read more about Terrain Tamers in the Feature on page 18.) The following day concluded with presentations from OTA member, Jeff Griffin, with WHA Insurance on Enterprise Risk Management, an update from Chris Vest with OSHA, and Bryan Donahue with Donahue Law Firm on Firearm Policies. OTA would like to thank all our attendees, speakers, members who helped organize the event (including Jennifer King with WHA Insurance), and of course our sponsors. We hope everyone learned a lot, built their network and had a memorable experience. See you next year!
