OTA Dispatch Issue 1, 2019

22 Oregon Trucking Associations, Inc. Oregon Truck Dispatch SMC Update The Safety Management council met this quarter to hear from Great West Casualty’s Safety Representatives on common fleet exposures, dash cams and adaptive cruise, benefits of training, and factors that affect lawful yielding. The group hosts an event in each of the five regions of Oregon each quarter, typically with a guest speaker. Check out our event calendar at www.ortrucking.org/events for upcoming dates to learn and connect with other safety managers! Safety personnel and organizational leaders will be gathering for the annual Safety Conference in Salem again this spring. OTA, with the help of the SMC, brings a new set of diverse topics each year and provides attendees with takeaways for structuring their own company’s safety programs. We’ll have guest speakers throughout the day, an opportunity to mingle with other trucking industry members, a full display of products and services from allied partners, and of course plenty of food and coffee! Mark your calendar for April 18–19. OTA COUNCIL Updates Top Reasons to Attend the Oregon Truck Driving Championships TDC is our annual all-day state competition for truck drivers. Contestants must be accident free for one year prior to the event to qualify, and will be scored on a written exam, pre-trip inspection, and actual driving skills on a full course. Anyone is welcome to attend as a spectator for free. You’ll witness some impressive truck navigation skills that drivers use every day on our highways, it’s free, it’s family friendly, and it’s a whole lot of fun! Here are some reasons you may want to compete or volunteer: DRIVER • SHOWCASE YOUR SKILLS AS A DRIVER. Whether you’re a new driver, an experienced driver, have never competed before, or have even competed at Nationals, it’s a way for you test your knowledge and skills. • YOU’LL HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN IN OREGON AND COMPETE AT NATIONALS. Image that sense of accomplishment! • EVEN IF YOU DON’T WIN, YOU’LL KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO IMPROVE AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW. • YOU’LL BUILD SOLID FRIENDSHIPS WITH OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY. Many drivers come back year after year to compete. VOLUNTEER • YOU’RE SUPPORTING YOUR INDUSTRY, YOUR ASSOCIATION, AND OTHER DRIVERS (MAYBE EVEN FROM YOUR COMPANY). Plus, you’re promoting safety. We need a lot of volunteers to make the event happen, so we need your help! • IF YOU’RE A DRIVER AND HAVE NEVER COMPETED, YOU’LL GET A GLIMPSE OF WHAT THE EVENT ENTAILS AND WHAT OBSTACLES YOU MAY ENCOUNTER ON THE COURSE WHEN YOU DO COMPETE SO YOU CAN PRACTICE. Or, maybe you’re considering getting a CDL! • THERE ARE PLENTY OF NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES — for carriers and allied members. Contact us to get on the volunteer list at [email protected].
