OTA Dispatch Issue 3

32 Oregon Trucking Associations, Inc. Oregon Truck Dispatch Technology & Maintenance Council TMC Go Ahead and Take a Brake… Class! I t’s important for your technicians to stay current with equipment updates so your drivers are safe on the road. Of course, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get training through OTA’s Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), but simply having a class completion certificate isn’t enough. A brake inspector is considered any employee that is responsible for brake inspections, maintenance, service, or repairs and they must meet the applicable federal standards. As the employer, you must sign off on any brake inspector at your organization on the Brake Inspector Qualification Certification document to verify that the employee understands, is knowledgeable, and is capable of performing the inspection or brake service. The inspector could have training or experience but will typically have a combination. You, as the employer will need evidence of the inspector’s qualifications and should have the certification and other documentation available in case of an audit, accident, or other incident—such as a mechanical failure. OTA recommends that anyone who uses a third party to perform trucking maintenance follow up with their service provider to ensure their technicians have proper criteria to perform brake inspections and repairs. If anyone at your organization needs brake training, join us for some upcoming classes taught by instructor, Ed Bruser, with Bendix.
