OHCA Spring/Summer 2019

The Oregon Caregiver SPRING/SUMMER 2019 www.ohca.com 4 S eniors living in Oregon long term care communities receive some of the best care in the nation. Our committed workforce of passionate caregivers is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our residents. While there is no question that residents’ physical health needs are being tended to each and every day, communities also work to build robust wellness and activities programs to meet the mental and social health needs of residents. In this issue, we focus on “Quality Wellness and Activity Programming,” and in our feature story, three communities with robust wellness programs share their philosophies around wellness programming and the difference it makes for their residents. Two residents share their own stories about how these programs have bettered their lives. Linda Kirschbaum examines upcoming regulatory requirements for measuring resident satisfaction and best practices for facilities to comply with these requirements. Phil Bentley writes about the state of revenue reform in Oregon and explains why the current revenue system is not sustainable. Walt Dawson highlights some of the key findings from OHCA’s 2018 Long Term Care State Report which compiles important long term care data and trends in Oregon. Gwen Dayton considers how telehealth may be an emerging opportunity in long term care, making care more accessible and convenient for both providers and residents. In our policy maker profile, Senator Lori Monnes Anderson discusses her experi- ences as a nurse and how they shaped her political career, including her work as the Chair of the Senate Healthcare Committee. In our leader profile, JoAnn Vance, Executive Director of Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children, talks about some of the innovative and inspiring pro- gramming going on at the Center and what led her to her current role there. Ethel Henry, a resident at Touchmark in the West Hills and one of the residents interviewed in our feature article, talks about her life-long history with tap dance, how it has become a family affair, and how it keeps her young.
