In 2017, the median length of stay was just 19 days. 16 While some individuals have intensive care needs that necessitate longer stays, the compressing length of stay reflects a shift toward nursing facilities acting as providers of post-acute rehabilitative care. Oregon leads the nation in successful transitions from nursing facilities back to the community, which both lessens the financial burden on the Medicaid program and improves quality of life for residents. Alzheimer’s and Dementia Drive Service In 2018, Oregon’s Medicaid program is projected to spend over $235 million on Alzheimer’s and dementia care (total federal and state funds combined). 14 By the year 2025, costs are expected to increase to $311 million (total federal and state funds combined). 15 Oregon supports residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia mostly in their own homes as well as in provider communities.
