OHCA The Oregon Caregiver Fall/Winter 2019

The Oregon Caregiver FALL/WINTER 2019 www.ohca.com 4 I t takes a special person to be a caregiver. As Melissa Farias Virrueta, a CNA featured in our leader profile, says, “You have to have peace and love in you so that you can give it to others. Residents need that. They need to feel loved.” In this issue, we take a close look at caregiving and examine what it means to be a caregiver, the importance of caregivers in Oregon and nationally, and what can be done to help meet the growing need for caregivers at the state and federal levels. This issue also highlights the good outcomes that can come from partnering and collaborating with providers and other stakeholders, especially when it comes to the provision of emergency services. In our feature article, we look at what caregiving is like in rural Oregon and the special challenges communities are facing as they try to find quality caregivers and staff. Linda Kirschbaum shares recent stories of OHCA and long term care providers collaborating with emergency service providers to find thoughtful and useful solutions to local problems. Phil Bentley considers the caregiver workforce challenge and the role public policy might play in alleviating workforce shortages. Walt Dawson takes a deep dive into the data behind caregiving. Gwen Dayton examines three city ordinances related to emergency services, two that worked and serve as meaningful public policy and one that simply didn’t get it right. Senator Mark Hass joins us for our policy-maker Q&A and answers questions on his robust career in politics and why he is running for Secretary of State. In our leader profile, Melissa Farias Virrueta, a CNA at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in Lebanon, shares her love for caregiving. Melissa is OHCA’s 2019 Caregiver of the Year recipient. In addition to honoring Melissa in our leader profile, we also honor all of our 2019 OHCA Award recipients. These professionals go above and beyond each day to provide quality care to their residents.
