All of us in the long term care sector are dedicated to improving the quality of care for residents, and this doesn’t happen in a vacuum or by pointing fingers at methods that haven’t worked in the past. It happens by working together and sharing successes, ideas, and solutions. The feature story looks at collaborations facilitated within the long term care community between the Oregon Health Care Association, HealthInsights, the Oregon Patient Safety Commission, the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon, and CareOregon. Collaborations and idea-sharing will become an important aspect of the roll-out of HB 3359 which was passed in the 2017 Oregon Legislative Session. Linda Kirschbaum tackles the new metrics assisted living and residential care facilities must soon collect as a requirement of this bill and explains how facilities can start using existing tools and partnerships now to prepare. Phil Bentley examines the federal and state political health care landscape, and Walt Dawson digs into the latest long term care services scorecard and Oregon’s rankings. Gwen Dayton addresses some additional aspects of HB 3359 that focus on conditions on licensure and penalties. Oregon Speaker of the House, Tina Kotek, is featured in our policymaker profile. In our leader profile, Amanda Rice and Ariana Lopez Morales, who were featured in our Better Care Oregon grassroots campaign videos this spring, talk about their experiences working as caregivers in long term care. New to this issue is a profile of a resident, Addie Wallace, who lives at Marquis Piedmont. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet Addie and her daughter at the Vanport Commemoration Ceremony at the Capitol in May. In our profile, Addie talks about her experiences at the ceremony, living in Vanport in the 1940s, and living in a care facility. We also have a roundup of photos from the Annual Convention and information about upcoming special events that will provide training and education for caregivers and facility staff. I appreciate you taking the time to read this important issue of the Oregon Caregiver, and I hope you come away with a few new ideas for collaboration in your own workplace. Read the magazine anytime on our website, www.ohca.com, or on the magazine app “OHCA Caregiver,” which is available for Android and iPhone.  Using Collaboration to Drive Quality and Better Results
