OAHHS Hospital Voice Fall/Winter 2019

4 » A magazine for and about Oregon Community Hospitals. i f r t r it s it ls. With increasing pressure frommany sectors to reduce costs while keeping safety and quality high, our healthcare leaders are going to need ingenuity, a collaborative spirit, and a little bit of luck to answer this call. And while I have never worked with a more resilient group at any time in my career, I’m certain that Oregon’s hospital and health system leaders are going to need the support of their staff, their boards, their communities, policy makers, and others to get through this period of immense change. In preparation for this edition of Hospital Voice, I had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with Dave Northfield from our staff. Dave asked me to look back at my time here at OAHHS and reflect on our many accomplishments and, also, our numerous challenges. He came armed with a ton of questions and perspectives. It was a great two-hour conver- sation that reminded me of the ups and downs we all face in our careers. You can read the interview on page 14. Upon reflection, I walked away with an enormous sense of pride in what we have been able to accomplish, together. Together with OAHHS staff. Together with our members. Together with members of congress, state legislators, and governors. And most importantly, together with our communities. It hasn’t always been easy. It has been fun (mostly). But this has been one of the most reward- ing careers I could have hoped for. Now I’m on to finalizing my next career step, to help our healthcare leaders through this period of transformation. I’ve got one more good run left. I’ll let you know where I land. In the meantime, take a minute and think about what your role will be in helping our hospital and health system leaders move forward through this incredible period of change…together. Cheers! As I shared in this space last spring, I will be retiring as president and CEO of this great organization at the end of the year. It has been a genuine honor to serve the men and women that keep our great community hospitals and health systems going 24/7/365 for the last 14 years.
