14 » A magazine for and about Oregon Community Hospitals. At the end of 2019, Andy Davidson will wrap up his 14-year tenure leading the Oregon Association of Hospitals & Health Systems. As President and CEO, Andy has guided the organization through a period of transformational change in health care. Andy shared his thoughts recently with Dave Northfield about what he’ll miss, his hopes for the future of OAHHS, and health care in Oregon. How does it feel as you wind down your time at OAHHS? I was hired as CEO when I was 38. At that time, I could never have imagined being in any one position for 14 years. But life takes you where it’s supposed to take you. And I belonged here. I have no idea exactly what life’s journey has in store for me, but as long as you’re driven by a sense of what’s important to you and a core set of personal values, it all works out in the end. The last 14 years have been a period of immense change in the health care field. To say it’s been challenging would be an understatement, but those challenges have kept me motivated. It’s certainly never boring! And now, as I begin my next chapter, I’m energized to think about ways I can continue to track and influence the health care world from a different vantage point. You have quite a list of stakeholders competing for your attention as CEO. What’s that like? This is a complex organization made up of an increasingly complicated membership. We have 33 total members, many of whom are integrated systems, comprising 62 hospitals across the state. Each organization is focused on the change required to meet the needs of their community. And believe me, that is a complex set of considerations for a stand-alone community hospital or a large integrated delivery system. From a membership perspective, the change our members are going through should be reflected in how the association is governed and staffed, and which issues and initiatives we are focused on.
