ATSSA The Signal January February 2020

American Traffic Safety Services Association 28 The Foundation Foundation members by kicking off the Association’s largest event of the year with three fundraising events for the ATSS Foundation? We are looking forward to 2020 and continuing our efforts to help those in need.” ATSSA Board Member Jim Stewart of Vulcan Inc. said he’s been involved with the golf event and has been pleased to see the crowds each year. “These fundraising events allow Asso- ciation and nonprofit members from across the country to gather together and raise awareness about the importance of The Foundation’s work—a message they continue to send to fellow road- way safety infrastructuremembers and the general public,” Stewart said. “The 2020 turnout looks promising and it is my hope this continues to be the case with the golf event.” ATSSA member Sue Reiss, formerly of Impact Recovery Systems, said she remembered when the Sporting Clays Event was beginning fewer than ten years ago. “As with any new initiative or program, it can be a challenge to make some- thing truly successful,” Reiss said. “The number of attendees and funds gener- ated by the Sporting Clays Event today is a powerful sign of the high level of commitment Association and Founda- tion members have for the nonprofit’s programs.” She noted that the event sold out two years ago in San Antonio despite heavy rain. Both the golf and sporting clays events remain the largest fundraisers of the year for The Foundation’s programs and allow the nonprofit to provide Road- way Worker Memorial Scholarships to spouses and dependents of workers who are killed or permanently disabled in roadway work zone accidents. Donations and support from Founda- tion and ATSSAmembers also helpmain- tain the National Work Zone Memorial, which honors more than 1,500 people who have been killed in roadway work zone accidents. Funds also provide travel scholarships for children who have lost a parent, sibling, or caregiver to a roadway work zone incident to attend an Experience Camp, which are free camps held across the country for children to have fun and work through their grief.  ATSSA is a proud sponsor of The ATSS Foun- dation. Donations made to The Founda- tion are tax-deductible and a meaningful way to support the loved ones of those lost or injured in work zone crashes. The Foundation supports impacted families through several programs, including the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship and Experience Camps Travel Scholarship.
