ATSSA Signal July/August 2019

American Traffic Safety Services Association 12 When advocating with legislators on roadway safety infrastructure, an in-person meeting can make all the dif- ference. Having members of Congress out for site visits at ATSSA member com- panies takes that difference to another level, and helps legislators see the work members do each day tomake our road- ways safer. So far in 2019, ATSSA has hosted two congressional site visits with Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) in Arizona. Stanton serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Highways and Transit Subcommit- tee. During his site visits, Stanton visit- ed with ATSSAmember companies Pave- ment Marking, Inc. (PMI) in Tempe, Arizona and Trafficade in Phoenix, Arizona. “Traffic safety and roadway construction safety are big issues in a state with as much construction and infrastructure growth as Arizona,” said Stanton. “I re- cently got to visit with two of the nation’s leading companies in this space, Traffi- cade and Pavement Marking Inc., to learn more about their work to keep our roadways safe. We’re fortunate these companies call Arizona home.” ATSSA Chair and Chief Operating Officer of PMI Juan Arvizu spoke with Stanton about the importance of roadway safety infrastructure, how Connected and Au- tomated Vehicles (CAVs) will impact the infrastructure of the future, and the need for a long-term infrastructure funding bill. “The site visit gave us a chance to give him an opportunity to understand what we do as a business in his district. We were able to emphasize with him the importance of infrastructure for road- way safety, funding, and what we’ve done as an association to advance road- way safety,” said Arvizu. Arvizu shared why it’s important for ATSSAmember companies to host mem- bers of Congress at their businesses. “During the visit, that member of Con- gress gets to see firsthand the roadway safety infrastructure businesses work- ing in their districts. It personalizes what it is that we do, why it’s important, and why they should support investment in roadway safety infrastructure,” said Arvizu. ATSSA’sGovernment Relations teamworks with federal and state legislators across the country to coordinate site visits. Laying the roadwork ATSSA members meet with Arizona congressman “In Washington, D.C., we’re interacting with members of Congress and their staff on a daily basis, but there is real value in meeting with constituents in their district, hearing about the work ATSSA member companies do to sup- port the local economy and reduce se- rious injuries and fatalities on our na- tion’s roadways,” said ATSSA’s Director of Government Relations David Bell.
