ABC-SEMI Issue, 3 2020

10 Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. NEWS The beginning of March was shaping up to be like any other last few weeks of school. The Southeast Michigan Construction Academy (SEMCA) was preparing for final exams, report cards, and the school’s largest event, the Class of 2020 graduation. Things seemed to be moving along well until SEMCA was faced with a difficult decision. On March 11, SEMCA postponed classes due to the rapid transmission of COVID-19. At that time, this was a proactive decision as only a few Universities had closed. The closure seemed like the only option as there was concern for the well-being of the students, construction companies, and community. What was thought to be a temporary closure turned into a two-month long transition to fully online school. Just days after the notice was sent, it became painfully clear that social distancing guidelines were increasing, and we would all have to stay home. By March 25, all SEMCA’s classes were meeting online. This was a necessary step to meet Department of Labor requirements and qualified for classroom hours. Online school allowed all 25 classes to continue education safely. SEMCA’s model has historically been in-person education. This was done by design. Many of SEMCA’s students enrolled in the program because they wanted hands-on training taught by Master’s in their crafts. SEMCA’s instructors were not trained to deliver curriculum online; however, instead of surrendering to this challenge, the instructors found creative ways to reach their students. Instructors used different mediums based on their class needs. Many classes maintained a sense of normalcy by meeting at their scheduled time via Zoom. Other classes used SEMCA’s learning management system to track the completion of assignments. In all cases, there was an increased amount of communication through phone calls, text messages, and emails. Many instructors shared that, more than ever, strong student and instructor communication was essential.
