ABC-SEMI Issue 2 2020
Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. NEW LEADERSHIP Drew Maltese, the 39-year old energetic president of DJ Maltese Construction of Plymouth, MI was sworn in as Chairman of the ABC Southeast Michigan Chapter Board of Directors in January. Maltese takes over for Robert Clancy of Robert Clancy Contracting, who served two terms as chairman. The new chairman hit the ground running after his swearing in, announcing support for an audacious plan to grow chapter membership by 100 members over the next three years. If successful, such a bold move would be transformational to the organization for many years to come. In addition, he says his focus will be to grow SEMCA craft training enrollment while encouraging more members to get involved and attend ABC events. “Organizations are much stronger when members are socializing and doing business together,” he pointed out. Drew has a personal style reflective of a new generation of construction leaders. Whereas old school construction companies often cling to long-held habits like fax machine communications and pencil-to-paper estimating, this emerging construction executive excels in promoting his 74-year-old family-owned construction management business through innovative approaches including BNI networking and self-created social media interviews. For years, Maltese produced short introspective “Inpired Drew” videos highlighting simple concepts that left viewers with a new appreciation for small values which have a big impact on their lives. Drew has already brought his new style to the chapter, recording social media, and email videos promoting upcoming ABC events. ABC president/CEO Keith Ledbetter said that after four years of service as chapter chairman, Robert Clancy served with distinction. “Robert will be forever known as the innovator who made ABC contractors safer by hiring our first-ever safety director,” Ledbetter reflected. “Lives will be improved—and maybe even saved— thanks to Robert Clancy.” Maltese has got big shoes to fill, but he’s starting off on the right foot.
