ABC-SEMI Issue 1, 2019

2 Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Well, if you are reading this magazine, then the chances are that you are currently an ABC SEMI member. But have you ever stopped to think about exactly, “Why are you an ABC SEMI Member?” There is no doubt that many of you joined to take advantage of the competitive ABC Fund— which is the largest self-funded workers’ compensation program in the state of Michigan and regularly returns over 30%+ of the premiums to its members. Others may have joined because of our affiliated trade school, Southeastern Michigan Construction Academy (SEMCA). Without question, SEMCA is something all ABC SEMI Members can be proud of. With current enrollment approaching 500 students and alumni whom can boast some of the best tradesmen and woman in the business, it is truly a remarkable program. The construction skillset that is taught and its commitment to work ethic (which is inherent of the profession) have given a future to young men and women who otherwise had nowhere to turn. Still, others may have joined ABC SEMI because of your commitment to merit shop beliefs, values, and principles. Some of the more seasoned members can recall the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, where merit shop contractors were largely seen as second-rate companies. Yes, there have been many sleepless nights, stressful days, litigation, and unfortunately in some instances; damage, destruction, and vandalism to OUR equipment and jobsite… All for the simple reason that we did not believe in, nor belong to any union-sponsored labor organization in order to achieve the American Dream. Whatever the reason behind your membership, I hope that you are both proud and committed to our merit shop principles and philosophy. JFK most notably stated that one must “…ask not what your country can do for you…” but rather seek out what can be done to improve your country, organization, or philanthropic group which you may choose to claim membership. Anytime we involve ourselves in a group endeavor to benefit others, especially if the foundation and principles of that organization align with what we believe in with all our heart and soul, a unique phenomenon results. When we venture out to teach others we become the students, for when we share our philosophies, we broaden our own ability to understand others. Furthermore, when we surround ourselves with peers who have attained the respect of their subordinates, equals, and superiors, we realize the importance of servant leadership. One cannot lead without the respect of those which he has surrounded himself and such has been my experience throughout my involvement at ABC SEMI. As we look forward to a new year, I challenge each of you to consider your involvement with your ABC chapter. Ask yourself this: How many of the members do you know? Why are they successful? What do they do differently than others in their respective business? What does ABC SEMI offer its members to promote shared success? Are you familiar with ABC SEMI’s safety program—STEP? It is nationally recognized program whose participants boast the highest safety record in the industry. Should your employees further their education through taking advantage of SEMCA, Davenport University, or one of the other professional development programs offered through ABC SEMI? Are you aware of the current political climate and of the upcoming legislation which will affect your business? How many companies do you know who are not members—but should be? I sincerely hope each of you will consider increasing your involvement at ABC SEMI. Our chapter will be hosting numerous events throughout the year. Most markedly on the agenda is an event which will give credence to family driven values, where we will engage in a dinner and roundtable discussion awash with variety of business related topics. It is my hope that you will all be in attendance, for what better way exists to show our commitment to this great organization? If you have a passion for the merit shop principles and values, I would ask that you consider the possibility of becoming an ABC SEMI board member. The importance of boasting a strong and unified board of directors cannot be underscored enough. We need business professionals that are proven leaders and have an inherent desire to improve the construction industry across South East Michigan. Will you rise to the challenge?
