Their service is essential. Without them, access to health care and power restoration would continue to be a threat to the lives of our citizens who rely on those resources to survive. These fine men and women voluntarily brave harsh elements through hazardous terrain, carrying heavy suppression tools to face the flame. Their service is a gift hidden so far in the mountains that we seldom know that we are receiving it. Our foresters will never expect accolades for their service, but as their leader, I insist that we show our gratitude by acknowledging them as the first responders they are. One of the things that 2020 cemented for all of us is that technology is the future of efficient business operations. That is why we plan to continue building on technology by expanding online training options, maintaining a simplified website, and expanding the drone program by acquiring additional aircrafts and pilots. The division’s drone program has proven to be a valuable tool for locating wildfires, finding missing persons, and creating accurate records of logging operations. West Virginia has emerged nationally as a leader for its innovative use of unmanned aircraft technology in forestry practices and we plan to continue to be at the forefront of this initiative. We will continue exploring prospects to secure a skilled workforce specific to forestry. It is imperative that we work together to encourage students to consider a career in forestry. I believe that we can do this through a consolidated effort to increase enrollment in forestry programs in both higher education and vocational schools. This is the key to safeguarding the success of West Virginia’s forestry-based businesses as well as attracting new businesses to our great state. I did not start the new year retired as I planned but I find myself renewed with hope and excited about the future. The dedicated employees of the Division—our most valuable resource—will be the cornerstone that guarantees the success of my administration. Together, we can accomplish great things.
