In this image from 1904 (Fig. 2 – Sprouts from Stumps Cut the Previous Fall), numerous sprouts grow from a single stump, foreshadowing how this trait would allow American chestnut to remain on the landscape as a part of our forests 100 years after the chestnut blight.
