The Virginia Asphalt Association Education Committee is thrilled to announce an exciting addition to the VAA scholarship initiatives. Alongside the RJ Schreck scholarships, VAA is introducing a trade scholarship to support individuals pursuing a credential through the Virginia Infrastructure Academy (VIA Build Your Future scholarship), facilitated by the Virginia Asphalt Association (VAA). The VIA scholarship initiative is a testament to our commitment to fostering a workforce that will add talent to our industry. With a portion of the proceeds from our annual VAA Asphalt Open golf tournament earmarked for community college students, VAA invests in education and the future of the asphalt and construction industry. It is especially noteworthy that applicants for the Build Your Future scholarships do not need to be affiliated with a VAA member company to apply, broadening opportunities for a larger pool of candidates. To be eligible, candidates must pursue a credential in heavy equipment operation, diesel mechanic, welding, or electrical work; these are our industry’s four Build Your Future focus areas. VIA Scholarships are available year-round and will be offered through the different community colleges. The introduction of the Build Your Future scholarship also aligns with our mission to showcase the diverse career pathways available within the asphalt industry. By supporting students in trade-related programs, VAA aims to highlight the importance of skilled labor and provide avenues for individuals to excel in these fields. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 9, 2024, as VAA gears up for its biggest fundraiser, benefiting both RJ Schreck and Build Your Future scholarships. The 2024 VAA Asphalt Open will be held at the Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs, and there are many opportunities to get involved.
