Continued on Page 2 » SDDS 2023 President’s Message I would like to start my presidency by thanking everyone for their support and confidence to allow me to serve as president of Second District Dental Society (SDDS) for 2023. I have been practicing dentistry for over 35 years and have found it to be a noble and rewarding profession. Like many of you recent graduates, I had a hard time at first finding value in joining organized dentistry. The burden of school loans, in addition to the management of business and practice finances, is a daunting task. I was attending a continuing education course in Manhattan and at the lunch break, I was seated next to an older practitioner from Staten Island by the name of Dr. Carl Schmidt. Dr. Schmidt, who at the time was sitting president of SDDS’ branch society, Richmond County Dental Society (RCDS), invited me to attend an RCDS membership meeting. I took him up on that offer and attended the next monthly meeting and I’m glad I did. I met other practitioners from every aspect of dentistry. I made lifelong friends and found support for many of the questions I had about practicing dentistry. I was asked to serve on the board of RCDS and did for many years, later becoming an officer and eventually president of RCDS. As RCDS president-elect, you are required to sit on the SDDS board of trustees. I was appointed to several committees, as well as alternate to the then newly formed New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) House of Delegates. The following year, I became a seated SDDS board member and served on the Council on Governmental Affairs, where dentists meet politicians who can make or break the practice of dentistry. We try to make the politicians aware of the implications and detriments of their policies towards the dental 2023 SDDS President Dr. Raymond Flagiello Upcoming Events *Advance registration is required for all events. NYSDA, with the guidance of our lobbyist and our attorney, Lance Plunkett, examines every bill aimed at dentistry and helps politicians understand the impact of such legislation. In time, I was elected as an officer of the SDDS and rose through the ranks to become president of the society. The beauty of being a member of organized dentistry is that the volunteers make this organization great through their dedication to helping all members thrive. The SDDS Board is filled with both new and seasoned professionals with knowledge and experience
in all aspects of dentistry. Having a large, diverse, and engaged membership on the local, state and national levels gives us the resources to allow our profession to thrive and grow stronger for years to come. For 2023, I hope to uphold the integrity and dedication of the many presidents that have served before me. I pledge to serve the SDDS board of trustees and our membership to the best of my ability. The world is constantly changing and dentistry should evolve with those changes. Whether it is economic, governmental or technological changes, your board of trustees and the dental society staff remain ready to help you in any way they can. I would be remiss not to mention what makes the Society work at peak performance: the dedicated staff at SDDS, who are second to none. WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS! Dr. Craig Ratner Receives the SDDS Distinguished Service Award The Second District Dental Society (SDDS) Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual’s dedication to their profession, the SDDS and their patients. Dr. Craig Ratner has exemplified the award’s core ideals of dedication, commitment and generosity of spirit. The following attempts to compress and summarize his more than 30 years of service. Dr. Ratner’s commitment to his profession started early in his career. At the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, now Rutgers University, he served his dental school class as vice president of his class and as their delegate representative to the New Jersey Dental Association’s house of delegates. Following dental school, he completed two years of GPR residency at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), serving one as chief. Dr. Ratner stayed on at SIUH as a clinical instructor and continuing education coordinator for over 10 years. After residency, he joined his father, Dr. Steven Ratner, in private practice that has served the people of Staten Island for over 60 years. Dr. Ratner’s service to dentistry continued as he joined the board of the Richmond County Dental Society (RCDS), SDDS’ branch society, in his first few years of private practice. He served as editor of the RCDS Bulletin for five years. He eventually ascended the RCDS ladder, reaching the presidency in 2001. Dr. Ratner served the SDDS locally in many capacities. After joining the SDDS board in 2000, he was appointed and served on many SDDS committees including the Awards, Publications, House, Finance and Budget, Peer Review and Quality Assurance, Constitution and Bylaws, Audit and Administrative committees. He served as chair of many of them at various times. He has also volunteered at the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) since his second year of dental school. He served as the first chair of the joint SDDS/NYCDS GNYDM Audit Committee. Dr. Ratner climbed the ladder of SDDS, serving in every officer position and eventually as its president in 2008. Prose and parliamentary procedure have been common themes in Dr. Ratner’s service to SDDS. After several years as associate editor, in 2005 Dr. Ratner assumed the position of editor of the SDDS Bulletin. In his nine-year tenure as editor, he transformed the Bulletin from a cut and pasted, monochromatic, analog monthly newsletter to a vibrant, colorful periodical that had a digitally collaborative design. He was awarded the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) Bernard Tillis Award for Outstanding Writing in a dental publication while editor. Dr. Ratner is the chief author of the current revision of the SDDS Constitution and Bylaws, which were codified in 2012. When the GNYDM sought to rewrite their governing rules in 2012, Dr. Ratner was asked to act as moderator and author. Certain highlights stand out during Dr. Ratner’s local service to SDDS. He is responsible for SDDS’s current policy of term limits that promotes diversity and innovation in the SDDS leadership. He is also credited with the current system of sending SDDS’s officers to represent SDDS on the state and national level. However, Dr. Ratner touts his most special achievement as the creation of the SDDS Loan Forgiveness Program. Recognizing a desperate need to relieve dental student loan debt, Continued on Page 4 » Dr. Craig Ratner (left) receives the SDDS Distinguished Service Award from SDDS President Dr. Raymond Flagiello NEW MEMBERS DR. Now available in Staten Island this program, which started in 2016, rewards deserving SDDS members in the first five years of their practice with awards of up to $10,000. Since its inception, the program has awarded an amount just shy of $1 million. He currently serves as the chair of the SDDS Awards Committee, which administers and guides this valuable program. Dr. Ratner’s service continued on the state level. His career included terms on the NYSDA Councils on Annual Sessions, Dental Education and Licensure, Chemical Dependency and Dental Practice as well as NYSDA’s MLMIC Underwriting Committee, Audit Committee, and Special Committee on rewriting the NYSDA Constitution and Bylaws. Starting in 2005, Dr. Ratner represented the SDDS as one of three governors to the NYSDA board of governors, NYSDA’s legislative body at the time. In 2008, he was selected as one of two at-large governors to serve on the NYSDA executive committee, the precursor to today’s NYSDA board. When the NYSDA governance did change, it was a distinct honor when he was selected by SDDS to serve as its first trustee on this inaugural NYSDA board. This distinct honor continued on a higher level when NYSDA elected Dr. Ratner to ascend the ladder of the association. This culminated in him serving as president of NYSDA in 2020. As NYSDA president, Dr. Ratner credits his most distinctive challenge and success was role in leading the association, as its president, out of the COVID19 pandemic. Working tirelessly, he met countless times with legislators and regulators during the infamous shutdown leading to an earlier opening than was predicted. After the opening, Dr. Ratner further led NYSDA’s recovery through resource sharing, continued advocacy and constant communication. Dr. Ratner appeared several times on local television, newspaper and radio, and in national periodicals such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Crain’s New York Business representing, to the public, dentistry’s continued commitment to safety and recovery. According to Dr. Ratner, one of his most gratifying moments in dentistry was the day that he joined with fellow SDDS and NYSDA members to distribute free personal protective equipment to our members at SDDS headquarters. Working through channels, Dr. Ratner was instrumental in securing these desperately needed protective materials and facilitating their distribution at no cost to our members. As with his local service, there are certain important achievements that should be noted in his service to the state association. Dr. Ratner was one of the founding members and subsequent chair of the NYSDA Information Technology Committee (ITC). This committee was formed in 2011 in response to a new mandate of e-prescribing in New York. Dr. Ratner was the main author and presenter of the e-prescribing course that educated thousands of New York dentists, facilitating their compliance. The ITC also aided New York’s dentists in their education and compliance with the federal HIPAA security mandate. Dr. Ratner was the main author and presenter of NYSDA’s HIPAA Security and Cybersecurity compliance course. This course was given throughout the state and nationally. Dr. Ratner served his profession on the national level as well. He was elected as a delegate to the American Dental Association (ADA) house of delegates in 2008 where he has served until the present. It was his distinct honor to lead NYSDA’s caucus in the ADA House, serving as the caucus chair in 2019 and 2020. In 2014, he was appointed to the ADA’s Council on Dental Practice, where he later served as chair in 2018. He also served in the ADA’s Standards Committee on Dental Informatics from 2014 to 2019. As with his local and state service, Dr. Ratner points to certain distinct initiatives that were significant in his tenure on the national level. During his term on the ADA’s Council on Dental Practice (CDP), the issue of a dental benefit in Medicare was being considered. As CDP’s chair, Dr. Ratner successfully carried the council’s banner of rejecting this benefit to the ADA board and house of delegates. He also cites his authorship of the ADA’s policy on sleep related breathing disorders as one of his most important contributions to the profession. This policy has led to increased awareness and acceptance of dental sleep medicine by our profession and that of our medical colleagues. Ultimately, Dr. Ratner credits his ability to serve our profession at such a high level to the care and understanding of his wonderful family, charitable mentors, practice team members, devoted association staff, and the hundreds of friends and colleagues he has been fortunate to have collaborated with throughout his career. His lovely wife of 32 years and high school sweetheart, Amy, as well as his amazing children Ben and Lindsay, have encouraged and supported him at every turn. He credits his desire to initially serve to his father, who demonstrated everyday what selflessness and honor truly meant. 2023 SDDS Installation of Officers by: Stuart L. Segelnick, D.D.S., M.S., CDE, SDDS Bulletin Editor House of Delegates and past president of the SDDS and NYSDA, gave a poignant invocation starting with a moment of silence for the ones who passed since our last installation. Dr. Gounardes genially guided us in prayer for peace, health, happiness, and safety. NYSDA President Dr. James Galati gave an update on what our state society is doing for us, such as hiring a new lobbyist, Brianna McNamee, who will be guiding the Council on Governmental Affairs. He also related how the Council on Dental Education and Licensure has been reaching out to stakeholders to see how NYSDA can help improve the PGY-1 licensing program, focusing on “practice mobility and portability for dentists moving in and out of the state.” Additionally, NYSDA is considering generating legislation to force dental insurances to increase their medical loss ratio, allowing more money to go directly to patient care. Lastly, Dr. Galati spoke about the mentorship programs kicking off throughout the state, which will help all new dentists and jump-start their careers. Gregory Hill, J.D., C.A.E., the new executive director of NYSDA, introduced himself and followed up by sharing some principles that support an “aligned, forwardthinking and equitable partnership that maximizes the value and importance of each level of the tripartite to better serve our members and improve oral health.” The seven principles that will help lead NYSDA to success are: 1. transparent communications; 2. fostering an inclusive culture; 3. recognizing equity in partnership; 4. advocating for a unified mem- ber experience; 5. pursuing innovation and technology to build a datadriven, customer-centric and agile culture; 6. supporting a learning and shar- ing community; 7. valuing an intentional infrastructure to increase capacity to serve. Mr. Hill stressed that NYSDA has hired a full-time internal director of government affairs to help put forth the legislation NYSDA is pursuing. He also was very excited about the new director of NYSDA’s foundation. Mr. Hill said that NYSDA will be a resilient organization and “respond, recover and reimagine” during these final phases of the pandemic and, like the ADA, NYSDA will concentrate on “our customer/member focus, sustainability, innovation, global presence, and nimbleness.” The NYSDA executive director concluded by paraphrasing Dr. Mina Kim, New York County Dental Society president, who challenged all of us to be “better engaged and more supportive” in all levels of the tripartite. In his farewell address, Dr. Michael Donato, Jr. spoke nostalgically of the challenges of running our society during the pandemic and expressed his happiness that in-person meetings resumed during his term. Dr. Donato was proud that the SDDS gave $200,000 in grants to new dentists this year and almost $1 million since inception of the program. Another highlight of his year was completing the search to hire a new general manager of the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM). He went on to thank Dr. Steven Gounardes; Dr. Craig Ratner, past president of NYSDA and SDDS; Dr. Mitchell Mindlin, SDDS past president and NYSDA trustee; and Dr. John Demas, current NYSDA trustee. Dr. Donato also thanked Dr. Richard Oshrain, general chair of the GNYDM, and Dr. Robert Edwab, former executive director of the GNYDM, as well as the members of the GNYDM Organization Committee, troubleshooters, and staff who have brought our meeting back to success following the trials of A celebratory sensational atmosphere pervaded The University Club in New York City on Sunday, Jan. 8 with almost 200 Second District Dental Society (SDDS) members, family, friends, and VIPS joyously participating in SDDS’s annual Installation of Officers Luncheon. This year’s festivity was highlighted by smiling faces, hand shaking, and hugging—a social event not felt since the start of the pandemic. Attendees were so happy to meet, greet and renew ties with their colleagues that they were hesitant to leave the jam-packed preluncheon cocktail hour. When everyone entered the magnificent dining hall, Dr. Michael J. Donato Jr., immediate past president of the SDDS, warmly welcomed all attendees and then introduced Richmond County Dental Society (RCDS) Past President Dr. Edward Jastremski, who led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then went on to discuss the increased diversity and balance in our component and challenged all dental societies to do the same and promote diversity in their leadership positions, making us more relevant to our profession. He then thanked the staff for their help and hard work and alluded to the fact that Mr. Bernard Hackett, executive director of the SDDS, was not replaceable due to the great job he does. President Flagiello then concluded by thanking his staff and daughters—Rachel, who is finishing veterinary school; Mia, who is manager of the NewYorkMarriott Downtown Marriot in NYC; and Olivia, who is a fashion designer and an assistant buyer for Ross department stores in Manhattan. He lovingly thanked his wife, Meredith, who works with him at their dental office as a dental hygienist. Dr. Flagiello bestowed upon Dr. Craig Ratner the greatest award given to an SDDS member, the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Ratner served at every level of our local society along with our state and national organization to the utmost degree of competence and expert ability. Dr. Ratner then thanked the society for this prestigious award. He nostalgically reminisced about attending his first RCDS meeting with his father, who was also a dentist. He remembered serving as a governor to NYSDA and being called an “angry young man” at the time for his passion. He also recollected being a delegate, trustee and council chair on all levels of the tripartite. Dr. Ratner relayed the joy he felt when the governor allowed the reopening of dental offices during the pandemic, which was a direct result of NYSDA’s efforts. He will also never forget the day he conceived the SDDS Loan Forgiveness Program and said it was his most proud achievement along with the memory of the expressions on the young dentists’ faces when they received their grants. The award ceremony ensued with Dr. Flagiello presenting certificate of recognition awards for their exemplary service as members of the GNYDM Organization Committee from 2020 through 2022 to Dr. Paul Teplitsky and Dr. Steven Moss. Awards were also granted to Dr. Lorna FlamerCaldera and Dr. Philip Buccigrossi, Jr. for serving on the SDDS board of trustees. Dr. John Demas received an award for his service on the NYSDA Council of Dental Practice, and Dr. Mitchell Mindlin received an award for his service as NYSDA trustee. Their exemplary work and contributions to the SDDS were duly noted. The SDDS gives its supreme thanks to SDDS Executive Director Mr. Bernard Hackett, along with SDDS staff Ms. Christine Terrio, Ms. Stephanie Carter and Ms. Shayo Farinre, for their amazing behind the scenes performance on behalf of the SDDS. We sincerely appreciate their dedication. the pandemic. He then continued by thanking the board of trustees, council members, staff, and all our volunteers who worked so hard on all levels of the society. Furthermore, Dr. Donato thanked his private orthodontic office staff and especially his daughter, Dr. Nicolle Donato, and his wife, Elaine, for all their support. Dr. Donato then asked Dr. Craig Ratner to approach the stage to take his place as inducting officer. Dr. Ratner, then installed our bright, hardworking and amazing leaders, the 2023 officers: Treasurer Dr. Phyllis Merlino, Secretary Dr. Valerie Venterina, Vice President Dr. Paul Teplitsky, President-Elect Dr. Tricia Quartey-Sagaille and 2023 SDDS President Dr. Raymond Flagiello. For my New Year’s resolution, I’ve decided to limit the distractions and attempt a better work-life balance. When I finally get home after a long day at the office, I really would love to relax. Yes, there are so many enjoyable diversions that tempt me to abandon the work I still need to complete. Susan Randolph in her article “The Importance of Employee Breaks,” relates how it’s healthy to take a break, reduce your stress, and re-energize yourself. Included in her paper are some strategies to incorporate breaks into your workday. My problem is, once on intermission, I can’t get back on track! Maybe it’s today’s technology that so mercilessly whisks me away to a world filled with wonder, barring the resumption of my responsibilities. Today I’d like to share with you some failures regarding finalizing my tasks and why your SDDS Bulletin this month is probably way overdue. Hold on a minute, I just noticed it’s getting late; we didn’t finish our duties, and the deadline is a few days away. On the other hand, you know how difficult it was today at the office—come on, we deserve it; why shouldn’t we watch some TV and unwind? Streaming the night away Okay, maybe I am wasting my money, but my family likes to have cable TV, so I have Spectrum with over 175 channels. The advent of Happy 2023! Staying the Course by: Stuart L. Segelnick, D.D.S., M.S., CDE, SDDS Bulletin Editor streaming services brought even more choices and how could you go wrong with some plans selling for under $10 a month? Plus, there always seems to be something exciting to see. No judging, but now I also have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Peacock Premium Plus, and HBO Max. Unfortunately, some nights I spend more time surfing the different services trying to find a show to enjoy than watching a show! Googling and other search engine mayhem There is a tremendous amount of information online. Acquiring accurate data takes a lot of effort and time. Using the myriad different search engines and repositories can lead to many tangents. In researching this part of the article, I spent half an hour trying to find the definitive number of search engines in the world. Using DuckDuckGo took me to this site which lists 500 search engines categorized by different factors: https://www. linksmanagement.com/500search-engines/. I spent many more hours trying them out, which of course did not help me finish this article, but was very fun for a back seat researcher like me! Social media meandering Many of my friends are on multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok, and Snapchat. I’m not sure how they do it, or how they can post and respond all the time! Good time to check on my own Facebook and LinkedIn pages to see what everyone is posting. After too much time scrolling past people’s shared life events and liking everyone, it was time pull myself away. Wait! Rich Oshrain had won the 10k Turkey Trot, probably in preparation for trotting all over the Javits Center as general chair of the Greater New York Dental Meeting. Now I’m really getting tired. Shopping virtually Does anyone shop in person anymore? My fire/carbon monoxide alarm started chirping at me in the middle of the night letting us know it needed to be replaced. Many years ago, in a time so far away, I would drive to Home Depot and search the aisles for a replacement. Today I’m exploring Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Staples. com, and Homedepot.com for the best price, including delivery charges. I find it much harder to purchase online than in person unless you know exactly what you want. Years ago, I tried to buy my wife some jewelry online. What looked so large on the screen turned out to be embarrassingly tiny. Make sure wherever you buy online has a no-cost return policy! Checking your stock portfolio Please don’t cry. Looking at anyone’s stock portfolio today could cause some deep depression as our post-COVID country battles inflation, and heads into recession. One of my patients recommended opening up a business or personal account at Treasurydirect.gov and buying treasury bills that mature in as quickly as four weeks at interest rates of about 4%. At the same site you can purchase a $10,000 I-bond for about 7% annual interest rate. I’m not going to waste a minute more on watching my stocks fall—or am I? Emails and messaging So many emails and only so many seconds in a day. With my inbox filling up so quickly, it’s a wonder I have any time to respond. Most of the time, I’m just deleting and wondering why the spam filter hasn’t flagged those junk emails. The biggest problem is the time it takes me to go through my spam folder to restore important correspondence that was pulled into the rip current of oblivion. No, I’m not ignoring you. I must have missed your email; so listen, if you haven’t received a response, please give me a call! Now you know some of the distractions I face every day. I‘m sure you have your own list of diversions and favorite virtual places to lose yourself in. However, by finishing this article, I feel somewhat vindicated that I found a way to stay centered, not lose my concentration and be able to bask in the joy of completing a task before the deadline. I hope your year is filled with perseverance and high production! WWW.SDDSNY.ORG 13
