Segelnick, D.D.S., M.S., SDDS Bulletin Editor New York City was packed with people on Sunday, April 3 as hundreds of Second District Dental Society (SDDS) members, dignitaries, friends and family made their way to the SDDS annual installation of officers in-person event – a gala event not seen in over two years and never before celebrated in April! With masks in hand and rain falling from the sky, the shell-shocked post-traumatic stress of the pandemic miraculously washed away from attendees as they entered the majestic University Club of New York in midtown Manhattan. Trepidation transformed into wonderous festivity as fully vaccinated attendees were teleported to a pre-pandemic age of socializing without face coverings or social distancing. While attendees basked under the beautiful fresco ceiling depicting the heavens above, SDDS Past President Dr. Reneida Reyes began with a healing invocation wishing continued health to our nation and peace in the world. New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes, who needs no introduction being the son of our esteemed past SDDS president Dr. Steve Gounardes and a welcome part of the SDDS family, presented four awards. Senator Gounardes presented New York State Proclamations to Dr. Babak Bina, Dr. Paul Albicocco, and Dr. Alyson Buchalter for their amazing leadership during their presidencies in the preceding three years. He then called up Dr. Reneida Reyes and presented her with a proclamation for receiving the SDDS Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Reyes is one of only 14 SDDS members honored to ever receive the SDDS’s highest award. Dr. Paul Leary, ADA trustee and candidate for ADA president-elect, said that the worst thing to do to dentists in the middle of a pandemic is to lock SDDS President Dr. Michael Donato, Jr. is sworn inbyDr. Mitchell Mindlin, the installing officer for the ceremony

He thanked SDDS members for stepping up during this difficult time and thanked their spouses for being supportive. He also said he would not forget the SDDS for supporting him during his campaign for ADA president-elect. New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) President Dr. Kevin Henner spoke quickly and eloquently, starting his speech while holding up a poster of SDDS Executive Director Bernard Hackett that read “Bernie’s Place.” Dr. Henner thanked Mr. Hackett for inviting him to the event, admitting that he did not always go around carrying the poster but that he keeps a wallet-sized picture in his pocket. He congratulated the SDDS officers, especially Dr. Babak Bina, for his leadership in these difficult times. Dr. Henner spoke about the sad passing of our friend, NYSDA Executive Director Dr. Mark Feldman, who will be honored and celebrated at the upcoming NYSDA House of Delegates meeting in Saratoga Springs, NY. NYSDA has appointed a search committee that is currently leading the search for a new executive director, while Mr. Michael Hermann serves as the interim executive director. Dr. Henner discussed his proudest project as president is the association’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiative. He gave a brief legislative update along with future planned webinars to help our members. Dr. Babak Bina gave his farewell address highlighting three events that no other SDDS president ever accomplished and may never be able to do. First, he was the only president to be installed in his own basement. Second, he was the only president to stand up the entire two-hour installation for fear he would somehow disconnect his Zoom connection. Third, he was the only president to go through his whole term in office without having to set foot in the SDDS headquarters building. Dr. Bina then discussed his tough term as president when dentists had to learn how to exist both professionally and socially in a pandemic. “This virtual existence has taken a toll on our physical and mental wellbeing.” Dr. Bina then spoke about the loss this past year of some of his mentors and colleagues. He was proud of the SDDS accomplishments of providing now over a million dollars The 2022 SDDS officers are sworn in. Dr. Bina then thanked the GNYDM committee along with the new GNYDM general chairman, Dr. Richard Oshrain, for putting together a great meeting under confounding circumstances. He also thanked his colleagues and his family for helping him throughout his presidency. The installing officer, Dr. Mitchell Mindlin, who is NYSDA trustee and an SDDS past president, then installed our amazingly talented 2022 officers: Librarian Curator Dr. Phyllis Merlino, Treasurer Dr. Valerie Venterina, Secretary Dr. Paul Teplitsky, Vice President Dr. Tricia QuarteySagaille, President-Elect Dr. Raymond Flagiello and SDDS President Dr. Michael Donato, Jr. They were sworn in amidst thunderous applause. Dr. Michael Donato took the stage and gave an Academy Award worthy speech. He began by relating how nice it was to see everyone in person and not just Zoom heads, even joking about seeing Dr. Paul Albicocco with pants on his lower extremities. In response, Dr. Albicocco approached the stage and, harnessing his inner Will Smith, smacked Dr. Donato across his face. Laughter filled the hall as Dr. Albicocco was escorted out of the venue only to return shortly afterward to a standing ovation. Both Dr. Albicocco and Dr. Donato should receive an Oscar for their outstanding performance. Dr. Donato, in all seriousness, continued by quoting Martin Luther King Jr., “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” He compared all our volunteers to the heart and soul of our society, for giving of themselves to the betterment of dentistry and society. He outlined his goals of bringing new dentists and residents into organized dentistry by encouraging their involvement. One way they will see some immediate benefits is by taking advantage of the SDDS Loan Forgiveness Program, which has awarded 100 dentists with a total of almost one million dollars to date. Dr. Donato expressed that he was looking forward to offering in-person courses again and said that he would extend invitations to the dental assisting programs to join our educational meetings. He also will work with NYCDS and their president, Dr. Ioanna Mentzelopoulou, and the GNYDM Organization Committee and general chair to make an even greater post-pandemic GNYDM. Dr. Donato thanked Bernard Hackett for his over 30 years with the SDDS and the SDDS staff. Dr. Donato then spoke about his mentor, Dr. Robert Seminara, who was instrumental in his growth as a dentist and orthodontist. Some important lessons he learned from Dr. Seminara were professionalism, leadership, spirituality, humility and giving back to our profession. Dr. Donato told some heartfelt stories of their days practicing together in the office and the consummate Renaissance Man that Dr. Seminara is. Afterward Dr. Donato thanked his office staff from his three practices. He then thanked his family, his daughter Nicolle, who now practices with him, his sons Matthew and Michael III, and his wife, Elaine. Dr. Donato will undoubtably lead the SDDS to the next level. Awards were presented by Dr. Donato to Dr. Sandra Scibetta for serving on the SDDS board of trustees. Dr. John McIntyre received an award for his service as chair of the SDDS liability claims committee and on the NYSDA council of liability insurance. For their exemplary service as members of the GNYDMOrganization Committee from 2019 through 2021, Drs. Lorna Flamer-Caldera and Dr. Irvind Khurana were presented with Certificate of Recognition awards. Dr. James Doundoulakis also received an award for his two years serving as general chairman of the GNYDM. An immense thank you goes to Dr. John Halikias, SDDS past president and past GNYDM general chairman, who worked diligently behind the scenes to make our regal installation possible. We would also like to thank SDDS Executive Director Mr. Bernard Hackett, along with SDDS staff Ms. Christine Terrio, Ms. Stephanie Carter and Ms. Shayo Farinre, for their peak performance and tremendous efforts for the SDDS. We appreciate their dedication. WWW.SDDSNY.ORG 3

The screw was the portion of the safety glasses that connects the temple/arm to the rim/frame. Dentists should be aware of this radiographic artifact that may be seen much more frequently when working on the maxillary posterior areas of the jaw. Recommendations of safety glasses removal during X-rays or the use of different style safety glasses in your practice will solve this problem. 8 SDDS BULLETIN May/June 2022 — VOLUME 39 ◊ NUMBER 3
