Bend, Oregon, claims the title of the “Center of the Craft Beer Universe,” but another Oregon city has two of my favorite breweries within the boundaries of a tumultuous chapter in Oregon surveying history. Buoy Beer Company and Fort George Brewery sit on two of the earliest Donation Land Claims in Astoria. First, it’s important to clear up a few items related to the beer. Fort George Brewery of Astoria, Oregon, is located on our Lost Surveyor’s claim. Conveniently for surveyors, the Fort George 1811 Lager and their Magnetic Fields IPA both come with north arrows on the can, so you can find your way home if you overindulge. Definitely a surveyor’s beer! Amusingly, Fort George’s 1811 Lager might be a bit historicallymisleading even though it’s recognizedon the can as Astoria’s Bicentennial Beer. Fort George was actually established as Fort Astoria in 1811 and was controlled by the American-owned Pacific Fur Company. The name change didn’t come along until 1813 when the Pacific Fur Company interest was bought out by the British-controlled North West Company. The name “Fort George” was chosen in honor of Britain’s King George. There you have it . . . a brewery named for a king, brewing beer honoring the establishment of an American fort, in a town the Americans eventually ran the Brits out of. The next time you stop into the brewery you can have some fun and quiz the staff on those bits of information.
