23 stay in the buildings on his land. The army pursued voiding part of Tichenor’s claim, but ultimately lost in federal court when the suit was dismissed. There are many newspaper accounts of our Lost Surveyor’s life and times in the Northwest and Port Orford which regale his experiences as a sea captain and settler. Surveyor and Captain William Tichenor’s name is etched in the history of Port Orford not only through the original name of Humbug Mountain, but also Tichenor Street, Tichenor Rock, Tichenor Bay, and Tichenor Cemetery Road. The latter being where he is buried with his first wife and the mother of his eight children. His family also touched the town of Gold Beach, Oregon, which was originally called Ellensburg and was founded by his daughter, Sarah Ellen Tichenor in 1853. The name was changed by the postmaster in 1890 to avoid confusion with the town of Ellensburg, Washington. Port Orford offers many great outdoor activities ranging from kayaking in the protected bay and on nearby Garrison Lake, camping and hiking at Humbug Mountain State Park, touring the nearby Cape Blanco Lighthouse, fishing, and whale watching. Check it out and enjoy Not long after establishing Port Orford, Captain Tichenor lost his ship, the Sea Gull, at the mouth of the Humboldt River.
