PLSO The Oregon Surveyor May/June 2021
20 The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 44, No. 3 Featured Article ivy is in a continual state of creep along the trail and the parks team is hopeful for a future fall clean up session to help pull more of it. The final onsite crew consisted of an eclectic, energetic group of surveyors, friends, and family, old and young. We began arriving onsite around 8:30 a.m., to meet Nate and go over the plan for the cleanup activities. We set up some cof- fee, donuts, fruits and snacks, water, and Gatorades at a station that also included the state-required volunteer authoriza- tion form. Quite a bit of “legalese” went into that 4-page form, but a small moun- tain of paperwork is a small price to pay to get some necessary work done under the watchful guidance of the state. We could have made light work of the brush with power tools, but we weren’t approved for their use. Instead, we made the best of it and focused on quickly fill - ing Nate’s trailer with the copious amount of brush and sticks from the recent ice storms and hand-pulled ivy from the edge of the trail. We used 1/4-inch grav- el donated by Ryan Godsey to fill in small potholes along the trail. We hauled grav- el to the monument site to replace the eroding gaps between the paver stones, and added gravel to a small ADA path that navigates around the final stairs to the monument pad. These exercises were a good reminder of how many steps it is from the parking lot down to the mon- ument and we couldn’t help but notice all of the elevation changes. By noon we had completed much more than the parks hoped for and I believe everyone was left with a great sense of accomplish- ment and pride for leaving the site much better than it was. The day’s volunteering efforts were made possible by many individuals—Brady McGarry and his three kids, Kelvin, Clair, and Tesla; Ryan Godsey and daughter Al- ison; Pat Gaylord, Amy Schumacher, Gary Anderson, Ted Lambert, JimElam, and Or- egon State Park Ranger NathanWallace. x Pavers before moss removal.
