In Hoekstra’s opinion, one of the best reasons to remain a member of PLSO is to keep up on advances in the profes- sion. “Of course, it is a very convenient way of meeting the requirements of li- cense renewals every two years,” he says. “And it makes it easy for you to stay in touch with other surveyors that do sim- ilar things that you can communicate with, get advice from, and that sort of thing. My feeling is that it is important for professional surveyors to support the organization. People that helped me along in my career are Roger Campbell in 1970, Gene Ginther who was willing to give me a chance right after I failed in my business attempt, George Cathey, and fi - nally Deane Blair, who championed for me at my interview for the David Evans job. Of course, there were many others who have helped me in various ways. I still have old friends at David Evans and the PLSO conferences give me the oppor- tunity to see them every year.” x Left: Dan’s birthday in 2012. Above: Dan and Bernie.
