Oregon Truck Dispatch (More Than a) Laptop The first truly portable computer or laptop is considered to be the Osborne I, which was released in April 1981 and weighed 24.5-pounds. Still, for the best example of the progression to where we are now, with the average weight a laptop anywhere between two and eight pounds, one must look at IBM, starting with the IBM 5100. Released in September 1975, the computer weighed 55 pounds. A later version released in 1984 went down to 30-pounds. Weighing in at just 12 pounds, IBM announced its first “laptop” computer in 1986. IBM’s first notebook computer, the ThinkPad 775CD, was introduced in 1994. We’ve seen even more since then and there’s no telling what’s coming next!
