OTA Organic Report Fall 2022

Fall 2022 ORGANIC REPORT 38 Serving up unbiased research to empower consumers and strengthen organic. Thanks to support and investment from organic businesses, The Organic Center is the go-to source on the science of organic food and farming. We convene and help conduct credible, evidence-based science on the environmental and health effects of organic food, farming, and products and communicate the findings to the public. At any given time, our small but mighty staff is managing five to 10 active research projects funded through federal grants and private funding commitments. We validate science, obtain competitive federal funding, partner with universities, and communicate the credible benefits of organic to consumers. Our current and upcoming research initiatives include developing methods to build soil health and increase carbon sequestration, assessing the impacts of inadvertent pesticide contamination on organic farmers, measuring glyphosate levels in retail milk, reducing plastic in the organic supply chain, expanding U.S. organic cotton production, assessing the benefits of organic coffee, cacao and other tropical crops, and so much more. The Organic Center’s work builds long-term consumer confidence in organic. But we can’t do it without your help. Unrestricted funding allows us to continue our critical work—without the dedicated companies who sponsor our center, we would be unable to facilitate the science that empowers consumers and helps strengthen and expand sustainable farming to make organic even better.
