PEER GROUPS OBA Peer Groups: A Collaborative Hub for Bankers and Associate Members OBA peer groups finished 2023 strong, offering engagement opportunities for both bankers and OBA Associate Members. Following are some highlights from the close of the 2022–2023 peer group term. Bank Operations Roundtable Members of the Bank Operations Roundtable engaged in a legal Q&A session with Attorney Shannon Raye Martinez of Platinum OBA Associate Member Saalfeld Griggs PC. Topics ranged from the Right to Financial Privacy Act to account issues to requests from law enforcement, the IRS and attorneys. Finance & Accounting Committee FDICIA (the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Improvement Act of 1991) readiness was the focus of the Finance & Accounting Committee. Members engaged in discussion with Associate Members Scott Williams, partner, and Stephen Asai, senior manager, of Delap LLP for a CPA perspective. They then heard from Citizens Bank representatives for a bank perspective. Financial Institutions Security Task Force (FIST) Over 70 representatives from banks and credit unions joined the virtual Financial Institutions Security Task Force meeting, which included an FBI white collar crime update. In Oregon, victims lost over $237 million to financial and cyber schemes between October 2021 and 2023. The top types of fraud based on loss include data breaches, investment schemes, cryptocurrency fraud, business email compromise and confidence scams. FIST also heard from In Our Backyard for a training about human trafficking red flags for financial institutions. Human trafficking, or modern-day slavery, is the second largest and fastest growing crime in the world. The U.S. is both a destination and a source country, with individuals being brought to the U.S. and U.S. citizens being trafficked. Lending Committee Chris Hudgins, research analyst, real estate, with OBA Premier Association Member S&P Global Market Intelligence, provided the “State of the Commercial Real Estate Market” to Lending Committee members. Marketing Roundtable Members of the Marketing Roundtable met in Portland to reimagine banking through the lens of disruptive innovation and market transformation. With a presentation entitled, “But we’ve always done it this way,” Pacific West Bank’s Director of Fintech Compliance Dana Lawrence, CIA, CRMA, CFSA, CAMS, CRVPM, CCA, and Board Director Craig Ostbo, CEO of Oh! Strategic Branding (pictured below), led an insightful day-long discussion. OBA roundtables are open to all member bankers while committees and task forces are by bank appointment.
