OBJECTIVES: • The importance of dysfunctional breathing and its impact on a patient’s health. • The different severities of sleep disordered breathing and its impact on a patient. • How seeing patients through an Airway Health lens leads to better dentistry. Billie Adams, DDS Dr. Billie Adams is a graduate of Creighton University School of Dentistry. She is currently practicing general dentistry in her private practice, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her practice focus is comprehensive dental care, with an emphasis on function. Her family practice welcomes patients of all ages, and prioritizes prevention and early intervention. Over her career, she has received extensive training in full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, clear aligner therapy, sleep disordered breathing, and obstructive sleep apnea. She also has training in functional frenuloplasty, orofacial myofunctional therapy, TMJ disorders, growth guidance in pediatric patients, laser therapies, and non-surgical TAD expansion in adults. Dr. Adams’ journey in dental sleep medicine first began with adults and oral appliance therapy. Shortly after learning and understanding the impact the mouth has on a patient’s ability to breathe well, she began to wonder, “as dentists, is there more we can do and how early should we start?” This thought process turned her focus toward the population of pediatric sleep disordered breathing and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea patients. In her community, she has worked diligently to establish a multidisciplinary team, including: sleep physicians, ENTs, surgeons, and therapists, to support this mission and optimize patient care. Some of her affiliations and achievements along her journey include: an active member in the International Team of Implantology since 2012, Spear Study Club, and CDOCS. In 2013, she earned a Dental Implant Fellowship from the Rocky Mountain Dental Institute, as well as Fellowship from The International Congress of Oral Implantologists. She is also a member of ASAP (Airway, Sleep, And Pediatrics) Pathway, World Dentofacial Sleep Society, The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Academy of Laser Dentistry, and a graduate of the Tufts University Pediatric Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency. She is very passionate about airway dentistry and continues to dedicate many hours developing her skill and knowledge in this area of practice. When she is not practicing or advancing her education, she is spending treasured time with her husband and two boys.
