4 55th NCSM Annual Conference Dear Colleagues, Welcome to Washington, DC, and the 55th NCSM Annual Conference! Our theme this year is “Windows and Mirrors: Stories of Bold Math Leadership,” which brings me back to my academic roots of how teachers construct their knowledge through narrative ways of knowing. We are humans. Teaching and learning is a human endeavor. And when humans interact, we make sense of our experiences through stories. We organize these stories in our minds, we share what we learned by telling our stories, and we learn from listening to others’ stories. And that’s why I’m so excited that we are honoring storytelling at this year’s conference! On behalf of the NCSM Board of Directors and the Washington, DC, Conference Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the American capital city. We are grateful you have joined us in your commitment to bold mathematics leadership. Your presence at our 55th Annual Conference enriches us all as you join colleagues in learning from top-tier national and international speakers, build your professional network, and collaborate as we move forward our shared ideas of powerful mathematics teaching and learning for each and every student. We’ve curated a set of more than 200 sessions focused on the following four conference strands which should provide you with a meaningful experience tailored to your needs. • Stories of Advocacy • Stories of Empowerment • Stories of Redesigning Mathematics Instruction • Stories Yet To Be Told Please read the information that is included within this program book to enhance your conference experience. You may also use the NCSM conference app for the most up-to-date information during the conference. Don’t forget to review the valuable information and enjoy the goodies included in your conference bag! In addition to the many sessions, we have included dedicated time in our exhibit hall for you to network with other conference attendees and our sponsors. Thank you to our speakers! You are the people whose work we read, whose stories we follow on social media, and who are doing the work in your schools, districts, and organizations that help us all move closer to realizing our goals and visions. You are the storytellers from whom we are gathered together to learn. Thank you to our sponsors, exhibitors, and other partners. Your willingness to contribute your money, time, and resources toward our conference makes it possible for us to gather together and keep registration costs down. The ideas and resources that you make available to mathematics educators and mathematics leaders make it possible for us to get the work done here and for our members to get it done back home. Thank you to our members and attendees for bringing your expertise to our annual meeting and joining us for a memorable experience. NCSM is the premier mathematics leadership organization because of you. Together, we have the vision, the knowledge, and the experience to pave our way into the future. Sincerely, Paul Gray NCSM President PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2023
