INMEMORIAM Dr. Lee Augustus Bell Sep. 30, 1946 – Dec. 12, 2023 Dr. Bell earned a B.S. and a B.S.-PHR Degree from the University of Georgia. He earned a DMD degree from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry and his certificate in Periodontics from the Medical College of Georgia in 1976. Dr. Bell practiced periodontics in St. Simons Island and retired in 2010. He was part of Glynn County Dental Society (Past President), American Academy of Periodontology, Georgia Society of Periodontics (Past President), and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is survived by his wife Nina Stancil Bell, son Lee Augustus Bell, Jr. and grandchildren. Dr. Anthony Malcom Cook Apr. 7, 1956 – Mar. 23, 2024 Dr. Anthony Cook earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Emory School of Dentistry after attending UGA. He was married to Julie Cook for nearly 40 years, having two children and grandchildren. Dr. Cook practiced cosmetic and restorative dentistry in Savannah for over 30 years. Professional achievements include presidencies at the Southeastern District Dental Association, Savannah Coastal Dental Society, and Coastal Dental Study Club. He was a lifetime emeritus member of the GDA, a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a graduate of the L.D. Panky Institute. Dr. Mary Lynn Crews Mar. 12, 1971 — Nov. 6, 2023 Dr. Crews earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1995 and completed her orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia in 1997. She opened her practice, Crews Orthodontics, in Atlanta in 2004. She met the love of her life, Chris Van Buren, in Atlanta. They enjoyed traveling the world together and making special memories with their daughter, Hadley. Dr. Crews is remembered for giving back to the community by treating underprivileged children and adolescents. Dr. John David Engel Jun. 20, 1939 – Jan. 22, 2024 Dr. Engel was a lifelong Bulldog, attending UGA before graduating from Emory Dental School in 1962. He served in the Air Force before returning to Atlanta and opening a dental practice in Dunwoody, GA. He was a member of the Northern District Dental Society, Hinman Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry (where he received his mastership), and he served as president of the Chattahoochee Dental Study Club and the former Medical and Dental Study Group - Emory. He enjoyed sailing, boating, hunting, fishing, and skiing, especially with his sons Jay, Brennen, and Ryan. Dr. James Ansley Granade Jr. Aug. 22, 1942 – Jan. 29, 2024 Born in Wilkes Co., Dr. Granade attended UGA and met Janet, his wife of 60 years. He graduated first in his class from Emory Dental School in 1968, and opened what is now LaVista Dentistry. He retired in 2020. His honors include Northern District Dental Society Dentist of the Year, American College of Dentists Fellow and member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was a GDA Honorable Fellow; GDIS board member; NDDS officer; Georgia Dental Education Foundation member; and fifty-year member of the Hinman Dental Society. He is survived by his wife and sons Dr. James A. Granade III and Jonathan R. Granade. Dr. Robert Toy Hurt III Apr. 20, 1966 – Jan. 4, 2024 Dr. Robert (Bob) Toy Hurt III earned his D.M.D. from Medical College of Georgia in 1992. Dr. Hurt loved his profession as a Dentist and had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He relished traveling, with cruises being among his preferred ways to explore. He cherished and was dedicated to his family including his wife of 34 years, Joycelyn; three sons, Robert (Rob) Hurt IV, Cole Hurt, and Aultman Hurt, and granddaughter, Loriana. 40 | Sept 2024
