26 Association Executive Profile meeting with our finance committee. It’s a mix of everything. AC Given that you’re an introvert, is the social aspect of your role challenging? MW It can be, but I’ve learned to adapt. I don’t love small talk, but I’ve developed the skill of networking. I don’t do well with names, but once I have a meaningful conversation with someone, I never forget them. My team laughs at me because I rely heavily on name tags at events! The hardest part of my role right now is dealing with the impact the pandemic has had on our industry. Many of our members are facing uncertainty, and helping them navigate that is a big focus for me. AC Looking at the future, what do you think are the biggest challenges for associations, and how can they thrive in the next 5–10 years? MW I think associations need to better reflect the diversity of the industries they serve. We’re still not seeing enough diversity in leadership, and that’s a problem. Younger generations, like my kids’ generation, expect to see themselves represented in the organizations they join, and we need to be purposeful about creating spaces that are inclusive and welcoming to everyone. It’s also important that we focus on creating a sense of community. People don’t join associations out of obligation anymore. They want to feel a sense of belonging. We need to understand why people join and make sure we’re delivering on those expectations. It’s not enough to just package everything and expect members to be happy—we need to meet them where they are. AC Finally, what advice would you give to someone just starting out in associations? MW My biggest advice is to network early and often. I didn’t realize the importance of building a professional community until later in my career, and I wish I had started sooner. Also, join an association and find a mentor. They will help shape your career in ways you can’t imagine. You never stop learning in this field, and being involved will help you grow both personally and professionally.
