By virtually every measure, Abrashoff’s grassroots, no executive leadership model caused exceptional results. Operating expenses of the ship were reduced by 25%, and the Benfold became known as the best ship in the Pacific Fleet and won the coveted Spokane Trophy for its high degree of combat readiness. This was accomplished because one man was determined to work with his people rather than giving orders to them.
