Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org The Lost Surveyor Question Continues on page 26 T R ecently while preparing for this arti- cle, I learned that Sean Connery had died. I soon realized one of my oth- er favorite actors, Clint Eastwood, is also 90 and has likely reached the end of his career. It’s the end of an era. This Lost Surveyor is a toast to both for their mov- ies about “The Rock.” It’s also a toast to a surveyor. So you are likely asking, what do Alcatraz Island, California, and the Lakev- iew, Oregon area have in common? Before we explore that bit of commonality, I should share how we arrived at this Lost Surveyor question. In 2008, I was a mem- ber of the Geomatics Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC) at Oregon Tech. At that time, my twin sons and I took a road trip each year. They each got their own trip any- where in the Northwest they wanted to go for the weekend. This one set the record of nearly 900 miles in a weekend. I would hand them a map and away we would go, eating from a cooler and sleeping in the truck as they directed the destinations of the trip. These trips with my sons led to a tradition of Lost Surveyor road trips even after they have grown and moved on with their own adventures. This particular trip with my son Mitch has now resulted in four Lost Surveyor arti- cles (Jan/Feb 2014, Nov/Dec 2015, and Jan/ Feb 2016). We began on Thursday after- noon traveling from Portland to Klamath Falls. After spending the night and attend- ing the fall IAC meeting on Friday, we left continues on page 24 T Dog Lake
